Job Summary:

This position has the primary responsibility to provide comprehensive instructional program support services for courses and labs in the undergraduate mechanical engineering, engineering mechanics and/or aerospace engineering curricula. The individual will be expected to define, update, and deliver a high-quality curriculum using best practices in instructional design and delivery. Successful candidates will be expected to use established course curriculum and materials to provide instruction to students enrolled in fundamental and design-related courses such as statics, mechanics of materials, dynamics, dynamic systems, CAD, FEA, mechatronics, design of machine elements, aerospace engineering and senior capstone design.

The individual will also interpret test scores and meet with students to assess/assist course progress and to provide advice and guidance when needed. The individual will oversee, maintain, and upgrade instructional laboratory spaces, equipment and software used by students in the ME Department. In addition, the successful candidate should participate in curriculum development by identifying opportunities to upgrade course content and developing and applying new undergraduate educational approaches as requested by the department, and based on data obtained through student course evaluations or other information systems.

The individual will work with faculty and education innovation programs to review, develop, and apply new teaching techniques and methods of delivery as continuous improvement to the ME department's instructional program. To achieve the above, it is expected that the individual will participate in meetings or programs to learn of opportunities to advance instructional methods and programs and present ideas related to instructional programs internal or external to the department.

In some instances, it may be necessary to supervise, train and evaluate teaching assistants (TAs). In this case, the successful candidate will work with those TAs to deliver quality instructional materials. For instance, the individual will observe TAs to provide mid-semester and end-of-semester feedback for improving teaching skills, counsel TAs on grading issues along with student and teaching concerns and assist in the development of web course (outreach) content to aid in the training of new TAs.

The teaching load for this position will be determined based on university guideline, dependent on the percent appointment of hire.

Additional Information:
  • Hiring at the I or II level will depend on accomplishments and experience including but not limited to; a strong record of teaching, classroom innovation, the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning.
  • This position can be full or part-time, between 33% - 100%
  • The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring eligibility for employment in the United States on or before the effective date of the appointment. University sponsorship is not available for this position.

  • Supervises the day to day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
  • Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy
  • Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • Assists in developing techniques and/or model programs for carrying out instructional goals in disciplinary area and may help identify ways in which new techniques could be of assistance
  • Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $80,000, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
  • 1 year of experience in engineering instruction or working with engineering students at the college level
  • 3 years of experience in engineering research or industry
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Industry experience in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Experience with Hands‑on Lab or Project‑based Instruction of Engineering students
  • Prior teaching experience in relevant or related courses such as statics, mechanics of materials, dynamics, dynamic systems, CAD, FEA, mechatronics, design of machine elements, aerospace engineering and senior capstone design
