Position Summary

Assists one or more teachers with one‑on‑one or small group tutoring and/or in the direct care, supervision, and support of the children in a classroom setting. Maintains and prepares classroom materials, attendance records, health forms, and student files. Provides instructional assistance that reinforces learning to individuals or small groups of students.

Para educator I – Kindergarten/Locker Room

Assists one or more teachers with one‑on‑one or small group tutoring and/or in the direct care, supervision, and support of the children in a classroom setting. Maintains and prepares classroom materials, attendance records, health forms, and student files. Provides instructional assistance that reinforces learning to individuals or small groups of students.

Para educator II – Mild/Moderate

Provides instructional, group and individual behavior, and clerical support to teachers in special education classroom settings, assisting individuals or small groups of students to enhance learning. Assists teachers with instruction and classroom management that occurs in special education and general education classrooms and play field environs.

Para educator III – Moderate/Severe

Performs specialized instructional support to individuals and groups of Special Education or Severely Handicapped students. This position applies to those who have been trained and who are integrating significant para‑professional health care services or behavior interventions with instructional support. Requires CPR/First Aid and Strength Testing.

Para educator Independence Facilitator

Assists individuals or small groups of students. Requires Strength Testing and typically requires CPR/First Aid. Provides individual behavior intervention and medical support to students in a classroom setting, assists teachers with instruction and classroom management that occurs in special education and general education classrooms, lunchroom and play field environs.

Education and Experience

The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and successful completion of a competency assessment demonstrating knowledge and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics. Completion of at least 48 college credit units may substitute for the competency assessment.

Licenses and Certificates
  • May require a valid driver’s license.
  • Compliance with District skill/competency requirements.
  • May require a valid First Aid/CPR card.

  • Proof of HS Graduation (High School Diploma, High School Transcripts or equivalent (e.g., GED)).
  • Copy of Transcript (48 college semester units OR Instructional Para educator Proficiency Test Certificate).
Additional Requirements for Para educator III
  • Pass Employee Entrance Evaluation (Strength Test).
  • CPR and First Aid Certification (current and valid).
