Purpose of the Position

Medically‑fragile Special Education Assistants provide assistance to students with a variety of complex health conditions that impact engagement, participation, and performance across all learning environments in the inclusive school and community settings. Duties may include, but are not limited to: wheelchair mobility and maneuvering, positioning, transferring and/or lifting with or without mechanical assistance, feeding with or without adaptive assistance, delegated medical procedures, delegated medication administration, bath rooming, diapering, documentation and maintenance of daily procedure or treatment records, and assisting with the instructional program using instructional materials adapted to meet the needs of students from 3‑21 years of age.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Work with a wide range of students with health, physical, emotional, intellectual, and/or behavioral disabilities.
  • Student support needs may include g‑tube or oral feedings, diapering, bathroom assistance, mobility training including use of adaptive equipment, mobility, positioning, wheelchair/ambulation assistance, and other medical procedures as prescribed.
  • Under the direction of the teacher, provide instructional support to students in specialized and inclusive learning environments and at community‑based sites.
  • Assist students individually and in small groups with specialized programming.
  • Monitor and support student behavior consistent with strategies outlined in the behavioral educational plan (BEP).
  • Support social skills development.
  • Familiar with restorative practices in regards to conflict resolution.
  • Provide physical assistance (proximity or direct support) in transporting students between classrooms and other learning environments.
  • Assist trained personnel with loading and unloading students from vehicles.
  • Accompany and support students on school‑related outings.
  • Help staff with student’s adaptive/self‑care needs throughout the day as needed.
  • Maintain health records and follow established health plans and health protocols specifically related to student’s complex health needs, including daily charting and data collection (e.g., charting seizure activity).
  • Other duties as assigned when student is not in attendance (e.g., supervise lunchrooms, recess, playground, and hallways).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong communication skills with staff to relay changing health status of student that occurs during the day with health office or school‑based staff.
  • Ability to implement the prescribed health plan designed by the health team.
  • Ability to implement recommendations from occupational and physical therapists concerning positioning, feeding, bath rooming, mobility, transferring, etc.
  • Ability to consistently follow appropriate hygiene practices as outlined in MMSD Health Policies and student’s care plan.
  • Ability to monitor and respond to student behavior as outlined in the student’s behavior education plan (BEP).
  • Ability to maintain student confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students who are non‑verbal or unintelligible, culturally‑diverse students, health services staff and community partners in a professional and timely manner.
  • Ability to push and maintain control of a student’s manual (non‑motorized) wheelchair.
  • Ability to walk, lift (up to 50 lbs.), climb stairs, bend, reach, extend, and kneel within the context of performing job duties.
  • Follow all MMSD District and Health Services Guidelines and emergency protocols for students.
  • Recognize one’s implicit biases and own a commitment to MMSD and Health services equity vision, anti‑racism knowledge and practice improvement.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Desire to work with students who have complex health needs.
  • Must have experience working with children.
  • AHA BLS CPR/AED for HCP Certification is required or must be obtained within 3 months of hire and maintained on an annual basis.
  • Experience working cross‑culturally and/or commitment to work toward improving one’s own cultural competence.
