The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is seeking qualified applicants who are committed to supporting students and families in an inclusive, anti-racist district. This description outlines the role of Bilingual Resource Specialist and the essential responsibilities and qualifications.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Instructional Supports & Service Delivery
- Maintain and adhere to a weekly schedule of academic and linguistic support in collaboration with school administration and teaching staff based on the needs of English Learners (ELs) as indicated on students’ ILP forms
- Provide students with academic, linguistic, and cultural support in the classroom in collaboration with teaching staff or administrators
- Facilitate and enhance communication, including translation and interpretation
- Build relationships with English Learners (ELs) and their families
- Student Placement
- Support office staff and ESL/Bilingual Resource Teacher (BRT) to welcome families, provide interpretation for paperwork, and inform parents about available services
- Assist with communication to families regarding Home Language Survey and ESL status/services
- Ensure EL records are complete and current
- Help transition newcomers into student life through social, emotional, and academic support in collaboration with other staff
- Collaboration with Teaching Staff
- Participate as an active team member in discussions of academic, transition, graduation, and career/vocational issues related to ELs
- Contribute ideas to planning ESL/Bilingual instructional programs and culturally relevant materials
- Differentiate and obtain cultural background information relevant for instruction and assessment
- Implement pre-planned one-on-one and small group lesson plans by certified teaching staff
- Consult with staff to provide cultural or language-based explanations to student issues
- Classroom Support
- Provide support to ELs in core academic instruction in an inclusive environment under guidance of the classroom teacher and/or ESL/BRT
- Provide support to ELs in small groups as needed
- Assessment
- Provide accommodations (e.g., interpretation support) as outlined for ELs during testing
- Facilitate communication between linguistically and/or culturally diverse parties
- Provide written translation of school documents
- Provide interpretation for staff contacting parents in person or by phone
- Connect students/families with staff through oral interpretation
- Provide interpretation at school events and meetings
- Assist prior to IEP meetings with interpretation as needed
- Assist families in completing district/school paperwork in their native language
- Assist families and students in navigating U.S. school norms and practices and community resources
- Share culturally relevant information with staff during established meetings
- Explain district Behavior Education Plan to students and families
- Provide social/emotional support for ELs, especially those adapting to school culture
- Support schools in developing culturally relevant family outreach
- Connect students/families with district and community resources (e.g., clinics, health events, tutoring, housing and employment support)
- Facilitate communication with outside agencies and relay recommendations of community-based services
- Must pass MMSD reading, writing, and oral proficiency assessment in target language and English (based on district screening process)
- Upon successful application, you will receive testing information for reading, writing, and oral language proficiency assessments to determine eligibility for the position
- Upon passing the assessments, your application will be reviewed by the hiring manager; you may be contacted to schedule an interview
- Travel to different district locations and off-site meetings may be required
- Evenings, nights, and some weekends may be required
- Hybrid work flexibility may be available depending on position and work unit; details discussed in the interview process
- School-based positions are in-person unless directed otherwise by the building principal
Ability to work in generally safe conditions with minimal risk; may lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and may involve walking, sitting, stooping, or reaching. Dexterity is required for office tasks. Extended periods of sitting may be necessary. Ability to work in indoor/outdoor environments and in varying temperatures, including inclement weather.
