Position: 1 Year Old Teacher

Summary

The Teacher is responsible for developing a cohesive teaching team, coordinating the curriculum, and managing the day-to-day operational activities of the classroom. Teachers must understand children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development to ensure a safe and stimulating environment where children are actively engaged and encouraged to succeed. The Teacher must be skilled in communicating with both children and adults to meet the needs of the children, effectively guide teacher assistants, and resolve parental concerns.

Duties
  • Provides a developmentally appropriate classroom that reflects the child’s learning and growth, while reaching the standards of the Red Caboose, Licensing, and Accreditation.
  • On an ongoing basis, plan, evaluate, and improve the physical environment in the classroom to create opportunities to meet the changing needs of the developing child.
  • Demonstrate cultural competency and respect for the child and family’s background by incorporating cultural, linguistic, and familial values into the childcare program and lesson plans.
  • Assist families in the transition and development of their child to prepare them for the next classroom.
  • Complete and report any symptoms of child abuse to supervisor and/or child‑abuse hotline – Mandated Reporter.
  • Conduct daily and weekly supervision of children.
  • Conduct daily and weekly supervision of Assistant Teacher.
  • Report all staffing and classroom concerns to Program Director and/or Executive Director in a timely manner.
  • Assist with other tasks in addition to the duties outlined in this job description, as required by the Team Philosophy.
  • Act in accordance with Red Caboose’s Mission Statement.
Written Documentation
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely client and agency records – e.g., completing daily meal, attendance, health, and incident reports in a timely manner and filing appropriate records.
  • Keep emergency forms, curriculum plans, individual child development profiles, and other required records up to date.
Collaboration
  • Participate in regularly scheduled team meetings.
  • Have open conversations with parents and other staff about the child’s status and progress.
  • Foster and maintain positive, ongoing, and open communication with parents/caregivers.
  • Provide a classroom experience that encourages parent participation.
  • Send regular newsletters to parents as part of the communication process.
Curriculum
  • Assess individual and group needs, attending to special needs, specific interests, strengths, and concerns.
  • Implement a Learn‑by‑Play curriculum that allows children to use their imagination and grow their skills through play and interaction.
  • Develop weekly lesson plans that are developmentally appropriate, intellectually challenging, and help each child grow.
  • Prepare classroom materials to align with weekly and daily goals and lesson plans.
Miscellaneous
  • Attend meetings and trainings, and complete required Continuing Education hours.
  • Perform other duties as established within Red Caboose, Licensing, and Accreditation Standards.
Requirements
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and basic computer skills.
  • High energy and the ability to work well with others (staff, children, and parents) and to foster a team environment.
  • A strong understanding of child development.
  • Infant/child CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Must pass a full background check and health screening.
  • Physical ability to take frequent walks, use hands and fingers, handle objects, tools, or controls, talk to and hear voices at many levels; may also need to kneel, bend, squat, or crawl.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Nice To Haves
  • Associate’s Degree in early childhood education or related field with a minimum of 30 credits in ECE.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional child‑care experience.
