Position: 4K Education Assistant (EA) - Lapham - 0.8 FTE - 26-27 SY

4K Elementary School Operations

Starting Compensation: $24.82

Employment Type: Non-Exempt

MMSD is seeking highly motivated and energetic applicants who have a good attitude, willingness to learn, and passion for impactful work and learning.

Purpose of Position

This position assists special education teachers with providing individualized support to 4K students with disabilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instructional support and reinforcement to students in academic, behavioral, and functional areas across school, community, and vocational settings.
  • Implement curriculum and behavioral intervention strategies across environments under the direction and guidance of a teacher and/or related services staff.
  • Perform transfers, apply adaptive devices, tube feedings, diapering, and provide bathroom assistance and mobility training.
  • Consistently use proper hygiene practices as prescribed by MMSD health policies.
  • Assist with coordination and communication activities with other staff to provide feedback regarding student performance.
  • Assist with data collection activities, reviewing and documenting student progress in academic and behavior areas.
  • Assist with monitoring and implementing positive behavior strategies in dealing with student behavior, physical restraint/management, implement safe space procedure, and behavior intervention plans.
  • Provide supervision during lunch, recess, playground, hallways, and field trips.
  • Participate in on-the-job training and district-level training.
  • Assist with loading and unloading school buses.
  • Assist with preparation of instructional materials under a teacher’s direction.
  • Maintain records.
  • Work with at least one scholar with an Individual Education Plan throughout work time and maintain a daily schedule of support under direction from the case manager.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Provide individual and small group instructional reinforcement.
  • Work independently with students in school, community, vocational, and domestic situations under the direction of a teacher.
  • Keep accurate student data.
  • Work with physically aggressive students.
  • Work with students who are nonverbal or who do not have intelligible speech.
  • Follow teacher direction, written plans, Individual Education Programs, and behavior intervention plans.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse students, staff, and community, orally and in writing.
  • Maintain student confidentiality.
  • Walk, lift up to 50 lbs., climb, bend, reach, and kneel.
  • Learn and use basic computer skills (e‑mail, internet, word processing).
  • Be mature, patient, and compassionate when working with all students.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience working cross‑culturally and/or commitment to improving one’s own cultural competence.
  • Associate’s Degree or 48 academic credits beyond high school or equivalent assessment.
  • Department of Public Instruction Certification (License) to work with disabled children.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree or 48 academic credits beyond high school.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Prior experience working in a public school setting.
  • Prior experience working with children who have disabilities.
  • Prior experience working with children who are non‑ambulatory and/or non‑verbal.
  • CPR certification.
  • First aid training.
  • Experience using e‑mail, internet, and word processing programs.
Working Conditions

Work may require travel to different locations within the district and to off‑site meetings. Position may require working evenings, nights, and some weekends.

Physical Requirements

Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury. This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and may involve walking, sitting, stooping or reaching. Manual dexterity is necessary for completing general tasks while operating office equipment. This position may require being stationary for extended periods of time.
