An Alternative Education Teacher supports academic and SEL skills development for students residing in the Metro Detention setting. The teacher will work with students in a co‑teaching environment alongside special education staff. The goal of Metro Middle and High is to make a positive academic and social‑emotional impact on all students, ensuring they are supported in order to reach their full potential post K‑12 education.
EssentialQualifications
- Instructing students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as critical reading instruction, discussions, project‑based learning, and demonstrations.
- Adapting teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
- Establishing clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicating those objectives to students.
- Establishing classroom management practices for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible, and observing behavioral requirements of the Detention facility.
- Communicating with parents/guardians to discuss their student's progress and to determine priorities for their children and their resource needs.
- Demonstrates through actions and words that every student can achieve high standards.
- Shares a commitment to excellence and equity for all students.
- Holds a clear mission and values orientation aligned with Madison's vision.
- Learn and implement communication protocols designed for the Metro Detention setting.
- Implement classroom management strategies to maintain student confidentiality.
- Observe all legal and ethical requirements specific to Metro Detention setting.
- Plans and executes rigorous, engaging units and lessons; including meaningful in‑class and out‑of‑class assignments and ensuring student mastery of content.
- Provides necessary scaffolds, interventions, and extensions to meet a range of learning needs.
- Understands and can articulate the systems and beliefs that lead to inequitable outcomes for students from historically marginalized communities and adapts instruction to meet the needs of each student.
- Creates and sustains a welcoming classroom environment that is culturally and linguistically inclusive.
- Uses data beyond standardized assessments to determine student learning needs and differentiate instruction in the classroom.
- Maintains responsive and efficient management of internal student data necessary to support rolling and frequent enrollment updates.
- Collaborates with peers to reflect on student achievement and teacher practice data to continuously plan and improve instruction.
- Collaborates with extended Metro Middle and High Team, OYR Support Staff and Administrators, and County Detention staff on an ongoing basis.
- Takes initiative to build relationships with students.
- Understands and respects unique family characteristics and finds ways to engage all families as full partners in their children's education.
