POSITION PURPOSEThe Late Day Preschool Teacher is responsible for preparing specific materials for the a program of children, ensuring the classroom compliments and supports Montessori philosophy, communicating regularly with the teaching team, planning a schedule supportive of the children, partnering with families, and addressing the needs of individual children.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS- Montessori certification
- Early Childhood Education degree
- DCF course to work as a lead teacher in a licensed childcare facility, Skills and Strategies for the Child Care Teacher or equivalent from a higher education institution

To support and complement the Late Day Montessori Classroom:
- Develops and follows an understanding of the Montessori philosophy.
- Prepares the environment daily to accept children.
- Plans, prepares, and creates materials that are inviting and engaging to the child.
- Sets up the classroom to support child independence, and provides real work opportunities for children.
- Allows children to continue with morning work in the afternoon while providing a set of complementary materials.
- Responsible for using the classroom allowance to maintain a set of engaging afternoon materials.
- Supports the classroom team by carrying out directives and plans for specific children set forth by the morning classroom teacher.
- Observes the children in their environment to assess their needs, skills, interests and talents.
- Provides a classroom that meets the needs of individual children.
- Follows ground-rules of the classroom established by the morning classroom.
Establishes and maintains a safe and healthy environment:
- Ensures that all classroom practices are in compliance with State Licensing Rules and City Accreditation Standards.
- Maintains a safe environment.
- Maintains a clean and sanitary classroom.
- Follows WMS policy for attendance and knows the whereabouts of children in their care at all times.
- Promotes safe and healthy behavior between children.
- Regularly reviews posted information to insure the safety and well being of the children.
- Manages emergencies and/or challenges with skill and expertise.
- Helps with dressing, undressing, and toileting, including diapering if needed.
- Physically engage with children which may require repetitive bending, sitting, standing, moving quickly across an indoor or outdoor surface, sight and hearing ability necessary to keep children within sight and sound, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Developing an understanding of Montessori philosophy and WMS Mission:
- Present materials as directed by Lead Montessori Teacher
- Know existing materials, their purpose and use, and become familiar with new materials
- Understand Montessori rationale in terms of approaching each child
- Adheres to ground rules and is a role model for all
- Encourages children to be independent
- Allows activities to be child-led
- Carries out WMS Child Guidance Policy
- Studies to continually deepen understanding of the Montessori Philosophy
- Works to carry out any adopted school initiatives (Environmental Stewardship, Diversity and Equity, and Inclusion) and organization’s mission
Establish positive and productive relationships with families:
- Relates pertinent information to parents on a daily basis
- Promotes communication with parents
- Relates all concerns regarding a child to the Morning Lead Montessori Teacher to communicate with the family
- Is friendly and positive when communicating any information regarding a child to the family
To maintain a commitment to professionalism:
- Promotes WMS’s philosophy and educational objectives
