Community Learning Center Assistant/Site Director - MSCR - 1.0 FTE

Purpose of Position

Under the general supervision of the Madison Schools & Community Recreation (MSCR) Recreation Specialist - Secondary Programs, this position will develop, promote, coordinate and supervise a variety of out of school and co-curricular activities for middle school students in a safe and enriching environment. It will serve as a youth program site director during summer.

This position will have a high degree of integrity, sustain a culture of continuous improvement, and be committed to creating and maintaining an inclusive work environment while having a growth mindset to a multi-faceted operation while having a focus on creating a positive work culture.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • This position supervises a range of MSCR seasonal and part time staff including Assistant Directors, Program Leaders, Club Leaders, Coaches, Instructors and Volunteers.
  • Supervisory duties include coaching, performance evaluation, provision of feedback, and ensuring accountability and alignment with District priorities and strategic goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Program Activity Coordination (55%)
  • Develop and implement a variety of out of school time activities for middle school students at assigned school. Activities may be organized to take place before, during school day breaks, after school and no-school days, with a focus on after school hours.
  • Conduct daily activity visits to monitor program effectiveness, provide feedback to staff and assist in problem solving.
  • Create a physically and emotionally safe and welcoming program environment for all participants and staff.
  • Promote positive staff/student relationships and focus on positive youth development.
  • Lead MSCR Summer Youth programming.
  • Will be assigned to be the Site Director of an MSCR summer youth program or camp.
  • Site location, age group of participants and programming may change during the summer.
Program Monitoring and Support (20%)
  • Track participation statistics, maintain necessary records and submit reports based on site-based reporting requirements.
  • Monitor, be accountable for and stay within the site-based budget.
  • Purchase supplies, monitor expenditures.
  • Ensure that staff and participants follow MSCR and MMSD policies and procedures.
  • Attend appropriate team, staff, and school meetings.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities annually outside of required team/department training.
Staff Recruiting and Oversight (15%)
  • Recruit club leaders, sport coaches and volunteers from within and outside of school staff.
  • Build positive relationships with school-based staff and promote the values and benefits of offering out of school activities.
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff.
  • Develop staff work schedules, assign staff, and oversee daily work.
  • Collect, submit and approve timesheets.
Community Coordination (5%)
  • Promote clubs and intramural sports to students and teachers within the school setting.
  • Work with school staff to disseminate information to youth and families.
  • Maintain MSCR site-based website with current and accurate information.
  • Share website to school-based and department communications.
  • Serve as a liaison between MSCR, school personnel, community members, parents and community agencies.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned by executive leadership or their representatives or designees.
  • Attend district and school functions that support MMSD’s strategic framework, initiatives, and core values.
  • Complete any and all district required training.
  • Build collaborative relationships with business partners.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Demonstrated ability to establish relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Follow principles and practices that promote and advance anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience in positive youth development – preferably with middle school students.
  • Strong organizational skills, detail oriented and recreation program planning knowledge and experience.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with staff, customers, and community organizations.
  • Proven leadership abilities and effective problem‑solving skills.
  • Knowledge of establishing teamwork, and building partnerships and positive relationships.
  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to perform when confronted with emergency, unusual and/or crisis situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with racially and culturally diverse participants, staff, parents, school staff and with the community.
