POSITION PURPOSEThe Toddler House Float Teacher is responsible for covering the scheduled or emergency absences of the WMS Toddler House staff pool and occasionally our Preschool staff. This includes, but is not limited to, carrying out Montessori philosophy, supervising children, communicating with parents, and providing a healthy and safe environment for children when covering a shift at the Toddler House (ages 16 months – 3.5 years old) and occasionally the Preschool (3 years old – 6 years old).

- Responsible for certain assigned areas of the classroom and specific blocks of time during the day assigned by the Lead teacher.
- Helps with dressing, undressing, and toileting if needed.
- Calmly facilitates transition activities.
- Assists in caring and maintaining the outdoor and indoor environments. This may include, but is not limited to, dishwashing, cleaning shelves, sweeping, and disinfecting.
- Maintains the materials and works according to the Lead Montessori Teacher’s directives.
- Assists children in maintaining the environment.
- Reports to Lead Montessori Teacher if materials are in need of replacement or repair.
- Ensures all practices are in compliance with State Licensing Rules and City Accreditation standards.
- Maintains a safe classroom.
- Maintains a clean and sanitary classroom.
- Follows WMS policy for attendance and knows the whereabouts of children in their responsibility care at all times.
- Promotes safe and healthy behavior between children.
- Present materials as directed by Lead Montessori Teacher.
- Knows existing materials, their purpose and use, and become familiar with new materials.
- Understands Montessori rationale in terms of approaching each child.
- Adheres to ground rules and is a role model for all.
- Encourages children to be independent.
- Allows activities to be child-led.
- Carries out WMS Child Guidance Policy.
- Studies to continually deepen understanding of the Montessori philosophy.
- Relates pertinent information to parents if Lead teacher is not available.
- Promotes communication with parents.
- Encourages parents to participate in program.
- Relates all concerns regarding a child to the Lead Montessori Teacher.
- Is friendly and positive when communicating any information regarding a child to the family.
- Promotes WMS’s philosophy and educational objectives.
- Follows WMS policies, procedures, and general work rules.
- Engages in ongoing staff development and continuing education to improve personal and professional skills.
- Attends monthly staff meetings, workshops, and in-service training provided by WMS unless the Director approves of absence.
- Attends WMS picnic and one WMS fundraising event per year.

- High school diploma or equivalent
- 18 years or older
- Hold the DCF required course to work as a teacher in a licensed childcare facility, Introduction to the Child Care Profession or equivalent from a higher education institution or complete required training within the first 6 months of employment
- Current CPR certification
- Abusive Head Trauma Prevention Training
- Children Abuse and Neglect Mandatory Reporter Training
- Woodland provides these trainings
- Must be able to perform all reasonable teacher physical demands
- Must be able to lift and carry an individual weighing 50 lbs
- Must be able stand for periods greater than 6 hours
- Must be able walk up and down stairs continuously
- Must be able turn, squat, kneel, crouch, and bend over without issue
- Must be able to work all contracted daily hours uninterrupted (besides designated break)
- Must be able to work all weekly contracted hours
