Impact of volunteering
Help adult students to succeed in English as a Second Language (ESL). Strong English skills give individuals the power of self-expression and make it easier for them to fully participate in the community. Students can gain important self-confidence in their language skills for use on the job, in daily life, and with friends and family.
Typical activitiesTeach ESL Beginner or Intermediate to a class of up to 15 students; plan lessons using the level objectives; plan class activities and exercises using provided book series and online resources; work with students with a variety of skill levels and language, cultural and educational backgrounds; engage a volunteer classroom assistant(s) in helping teach and practicing with the students in class.
Direction and assistance from the ESL Program Coordinator is provided as necessary and upon request.
1.5 hours/one class a week minimum; please allow an average of 30 minutes additional planning time weekly. Teacher volunteers are asked to commit to volunteering for at least three months (one semester).
Useful skills and QualificationsEither past teaching experience in any subject OR TEFL/TESL completion OR previous experience teaching or tutoring English as a Second Language. Strong English language skills are a must. Great people skills, respect for others, patience, and openness to working with people from many different backgrounds, languages, beliefs and cultures are all imperative.
RequirementsAs required by the Catholic Diocese of Madison, all volunteers age 18 and older working with students or with children at the Catholic Multicultural Center must complete a background check and go through VIRTUS training, a one-time, 1.5 hour online training on protecting children from abuse.
Before volunteering, must meet with the ESL Program Coordinator to determine if teaching ESL is an appropriate fit for both the volunteer and the program.
Benefits of volunteeringDevelop your teaching skills in a “real-world” classroom setting, with the flexibility to develop your own teaching style. We are happy to serve as a reference for you upon request. Meet people from all over the world and from many different language backgrounds!
