The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is the second‑largest school district in Wisconsin.
Purpose Of PositionUnder the direct supervision of the Director of Advanced Learning, the Advanced Learning Teacher Leader ensures that students with advanced learning needs are consistently challenged, engaged, and growing throughout their education. The teacher leader serves as a collaborative partner and resource within the department, actively working with Advanced Learning Teachers to coach and support in order to meet the needs of students.
The role supports schools to ensure students are learning in ways that match their strengths, interests, and needs across the five domains:
Specific Academic, General Intellectual, Creativity, Leadership, and Visual/Performing Arts.
- Direct School and AL Teacher Support (60%)
- Conduct regular site visits to support the AL Teacher using an agenda developed by the AL Leadership team.
- Assist AL Teachers in developing their daily schedule in collaboration with the building principal, based on a comprehensive review of data to determine Advanced Learning needs.
- Coordinate and support Advanced Learning services for students through extensions and enrichment opportunities that allow students to dive deeper into topics, build on their strengths, and meet their specific learning needs.
- Coordinate and support talent development opportunities for all students based on the Advanced Learning Services Continuum.
- Provide modeling, coaching, and concise, actionable feedback to Advanced Learning Teachers relative to aligning and adapting instructional practice to student needs.
- Coach Advanced Learning Teachers in the process for identification and service documentation of students with advanced learning needs.
- Support schools in analyzing data to increase proportionality within Advanced Learning Services.
- Support schools with subject and grade acceleration process.
- Attend family meetings as needed.
- Professional Development (20%)
- Assist in designing and leading professional development priorities.
- Lead AL Teacher meetings that focus on learning and data analysis to move department goals forward.
- Collaborate with principal and School Based Leadership Team members to improve student achievement and growth for students with advanced learning needs.
- Ensure access to Advanced Learning services that are culturally responsive and historically accurate.
- Program Implementation and Accountability (15%)
- Adhere to timelines, due dates, and department timelines.
- In collaboration with Advanced Learning Leadership, ensure protocols and guidance are accessible regarding the identification process, the AL Continuum, and acceleration protocols.
- Attend ongoing professional development to continuously build understanding of equity, identity, and talent development.
- Support staff in using data information systems and other platforms.
- Ensure timely completion of all documentation requirements, including, but not limited to, the documentation of students’ services and identifications.
- Other duties as assigned by Curriculum and Instruction (5%).
- Perform other duties as assigned by executive leadership or their representatives or designees.
- Attend district and school functions that support MMSD’s strategic framework, initiatives, and core values.
- Complete any and all district required training.
- Build collaborative relationships with business partners.
- Demonstrated ability to establish relationships at all levels of the organization.
- Follow principles and practices that promote and advance anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Demonstrated ability in coaching or other leadership roles working with teachers to develop and implement standards‑based curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices.
