Goodman Community Center has served a diverse group of neighbors and families for 70 years. Located in the Schenk‑Atwood neighborhood, we serve most individuals on the North or East side of Madison. We reach over 30,000 people annually through programming for children and youth ages 3‑18, a food pantry, a fitness center, community meeting spaces, and programming for older adults. • No formal background in education or tutoring required – training and ongoing support provided.
• Work‑study REQUIRED. Must have enough work‑study to cover the semester (6 hours per week at $17/hour from Jan 27 to Apr 30). Goodman cannot pay wages if the student no longer has work‑study funds.
• Must be open to working with elementary youth individually and in small groups.
• Background check free of convictions for serious offenses, as required by Goodman Community Center.
• Interest in supporting students in literacy; ability to communicate sensitivity, respect, and understanding; ability to establish and maintain a trusting relationship with elementary youth and co‑tutors; adaptively respond to students’ needs and strengths.

• In partnership with trained tutors, use provided tools and activities to tutor elementary students in literacy.
• Consult with Goodman Literacy Specialist for resources and support with struggling students.
• Monitor student reading growth through daily observation and group conversation/reflection.
• Select and prepare appropriate on‑site literacy materials/texts based on students’ most pressing needs.
• Model appropriate behavior and build positive relationships.
• Commit to the entire duration of the program, attending all training and tutoring sessions.
• First 6 weeks are seminar (training as a large group); last 8 weeks are practicum, where tutors continue to train while working with youth.
