Instrumentation Engineer I

The Nanoscale Fabrication Center (NFC) is seeking to add an Instrument Engineer to its cleanroom facility at UW-Madison. This role includes providing user training and technical support for NFC instrumentation, which may include lithography, dry etch, deposition, wet chemistry, packaging or thermal processing, depending on the experience and interest of the successful candidate. In addition, the role will include ensuring optimal instrument performance through routine maintenance and calibration, instrument repair, and the development of best practices and training materials.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Designs, plans, and performs preventative and reactive maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal and safe operation
  • Answers questions and provides technical information regarding instrumentation to staff, researchers, clients, and students
  • Facilitates the billing process
  • Investigates new research processes and technology solutions in collaboration with research/clinical staff, students, and clients
  • Supports troubleshooting efforts to define and resolve problems
  • Develops, integrates, tests, modifies, and may design sophisticated scientific equipment to support research/clinical initiatives and unit directives
  • Make the center a safe environment for everyone. Monitor researchers for safe practices and enforce safety policies. Monitor the facility for unsafe conditions and rectify them
  • Provides technical expertise to staff, researchers, clients, and students in the installation and use of equipment and instruments, exercising discretion and independent judgment to meet unit goals

Compensation

The starting salary is $80,000 annually, and is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years in semiconductor/device fabrication in a cleanroom environment, which may include experience during post-undergraduate education
  • Strong background in the use of micro- and nanofabrication techniques, equipment, and clean room protocols
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to work well in a team are essential requirements
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in student instruction or development of instructional materials
  • Strong background in lithography, dry etch, and physical vapor deposition
  • Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of these fabrication techniques: lithography, physical vapor deposition, plasma etch, wet chemistry, horizontal tube furnaces, or LPCVD systems
  • Experience and expertise in electrical and electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, and vacuum components as related to semiconductor/device fabrication equipment
  • More consideration will be given to candidates with experience in maintenance and the repair of semiconductor fabrication tools
Education

Required:

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or an Interdisciplinary Program focused on Micro/Nano device fabrication

Preferred:
Masters or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or an Interdisciplinary Program focused on Micro/Nano device fabrication.
