Our Madison, WI office seeks a Field Engineer III to join our growing Transportation Construction Engineering team. With our historic growth, it is an exciting time to join our team of employee‑owners. This opportunity entails construction inspection and materials testing on large highway and bridge construction projects throughout Wisconsin. The selected candidate will be responsible for providing daily inspection of multiple, complex activities within a given discipline/trade performed by the contractor in order to monitor the project compliance with plans, specifications and other contract provisions.
Maintains daily logs of inspection work which is assigned and reviews discrepancies or changes with the Project Engineer. Performs non‑routine and moderately complex assignments normally related to multiple and/or medium to large projects. Collaborates with the HNTB Transportation Construction Services team and project stakeholders to perform on‑site inspection, documentation, and materials verification.
- Inspects, monitors, and oversees construction field work tasks and activities on a project to ensure conformance to plans and specifications. Reads, interprets, and confirms compliance with applicable contract documents.
- Performs or oversees on‑site material testing. Reviews plans and specifications to determine material requirements (quantities and qualities). Responsible for tracking of item quantities and preparing pay estimates, and ensures that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications.
- Initiates field changes to drawings and specifications, identifies discrepancies or conflicts within the documents. Reviews contractor’s daily construction reports for accuracy, thoroughness, and consistency. Responsible for maintaining as‑constructed drawings and monitors contractors progress to analyze against progress schedule.
- Consults with Resident Engineer on work progress and construction problems, proactively recommends solutions, assists in the resolution of issues, and acts as a liaison with the engineer of record.
- Remains current and knowledgeable of industry technology and tools used to perform inspection work through industry resources, training, and research. Gains exposure to new technology and utilizes it (GPS/Rovers) to increase efficiency and accuracy of inspection tasks.
- Performs office engineer work when needed including but not limited to; prepares documentation for change orders, reviews change order scope of work, schedule and cost, processes and maintains tracking logs for RFIs, submittals, pay estimates and other deliverables. Assists in constructability reviews.
- Mentors and trains staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 4 years relevant experience, or
- Master's degree in Engineering and 3 years relevant experience, or
- Doctorate degree in Engineering and 2 years relevant experience.
- Identifies complex discrepancies or conflicts within documents and takes appropriate action to resolve issues.
- Provides advanced calculations, develops plots and graphs using Excel, and drafts detailed reports for project progress reporting to the client.
- Provides direction on projects to less experienced staff.
- Performs advanced shop drawing and submittal review as well as advanced CPM schedule analysis.
- Knowledge and experience with WisDOT highway and bridge construction
- WisDOT Highway Technician Certification Program credentials
- Familiarity with WisDOT design process and standards
- Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Construction Manager (CCM), or American Concrete Institute (ACI.)
