Our Madison, WI office seeks a Field Engineer II to join our growing Transportation Construction Engineering team. When you join our Wisconsin Construction Services team, you will work on some of the most challenging and high profile transportation infrastructure projects in Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest.
This opportunity entails construction inspection and materials testing on large highway and bridge construction projects throughout Wisconsin. The selected candidate will provide daily inspection of multiple, complex activities within a given discipline/trade performed by the contractor in order to monitor compliance with plans, specifications, and other contract provisions. They will maintain daily logs of inspection work, review discrepancies or changes with the Project Engineer, and perform non-routine and moderately complex assignments related to multiple or medium‑to‑large projects.
The Field Engineer II collaborates with the HNTB Transportation Construction Services team and project stakeholders to perform on‑site inspection, documentation, and materials verification.
- Assist with and monitor construction field work tasks and activities on a project to ensure conformance to plans and specifications. Read, comprehend, and check for compliance with applicable contract documents.
- Perform or observe on‑site material testing. Review plans and specifications to determine material requirements, pricing of materials, and ensure procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications.
- Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications and identify discrepancies or conflicts within the documents.
- Review contractor’s daily construction reports for accuracy, thoroughness, and consistency. Regularly review contractor’s as‑built mark‑ups and document project progress using video and photos.
- Consult with Resident Engineer on work progress and construction problems, proactively recommend solutions, assist in the resolution of issues, and act as a liaison with the engineer of record.
- Remain current and knowledgeable of industry technology and tools used to perform inspection work through industry resources, training, and research. Gain exposure to new technology and utilize it (GPS/Rovers) to increase efficiency and accuracy of inspection tasks.
- Perform office engineer work when needed, including but not limited to preparing meeting agendas and minutes, processing and maintaining tracking logs for RFIs, submittals, pay estimates, and other deliverables.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2 years relevant experience, or
- Master's degree in Engineering and 1 year relevant experience, or
- Doctorate degree in Engineering.
- Construction engineering and inspection of large highway and bridge construction projects in the Madison area and throughout southwest Wisconsin.
- Collaborating with the Transportation Construction Services team and project stakeholders to perform inspection, documentation, and materials verification.
- 2+ years experience working on WisDOT transportation projects.
- WisDOT Highway Technician Certification Program credentials.
- Engineer in Training (EIT).
