Controls Engineer - Custom Automation (Greenfield)
Madison, WI
About the RoleComm Scope's internal automation team is developing custom, semi-automated manufacturing equipment for a next-generation fiber optic connector product. This is a true greenfield environment-no legacy systems, no existing codebase, and minimal established controls architecture.
As a Controls Engineer, you will build systems from the ground up, writing PLC and Python-based machine control software, developing HMIs, and commissioning equipment through production readiness. This role is ideal for engineers who thrive on ownership, technical depth, and building machines from scratch.
What You'll Do- Develop PLC programs from scratch (Allen-Bradley Studio 5000, Structured Text, Ladder Logic)
- Build control systems for both PLC-based and Python-driven machines
- Design and configure Pro Face HMI interfaces
- Implement Keyence machine vision systems for inline inspection
- Integrate Epson robotic systems into automation workflows
- Create electrical schematics and panel layouts
- Configure sensors, I/O, and field devices
- Lead end-to-end debug and commissioning efforts
- Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers
- Collaborate with mechanical and process engineers on machine integration
Required:
- 5+ years of controls/automation engineering experience
- Proven experience writing PLC programs from scratch (greenfield)
- Strong Structured Text programming skills
- Experience with Allen-Bradley (preferred), Beckhoff/TwinCAT, or Siemens
- Hands‑on machine commissioning and debug experience
- Background in custom or special-purpose automation equipment
- Ability to lead technically and mentor junior engineers
Preferred:
- Python programming for automation/machine control
- Machine vision experience (Keyence or Cognex)
- Robotics integration (Epson, FANUC, or KUKA)
- HMI development (Pro Face preferred)
- Electrical design and panel layout experience
- Experience at a system integrator or custom machine builder
