Sierra Space Careers:

At Sierra Space, we build the missions and systems that keep our world secure in the domain above Earth.

Sierra Space team members share a spirit of innovation and collaboration and a belief that we can deliver on the boldest missions in space today. Together with our customers, we aim to safeguard our nation, sustain human presence in space, and secure the freedom of operations in low Earth orbit and beyond.

Our success is measured by the trust of those who rely on what we build and deliver, and our technologies keep the United States and its allies mission-ready throughout space.

We are mission-driven, and together, we are an extraordinary team.

About the Role

The Propulsion Engineer III will play a critical role in the design, development, and testing of advanced propulsion systems for aerospace applications. This position requires a deep understanding of propulsion engineering principles, including fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and combustion processes. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading complex projects, conducting detailed analyses, and ensuring the reliability and performance of propulsion systems.

This role involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers, to deliver innovative solutions that meet stringent performance and safety requirements. The Propulsion Engineer III will also be expected to stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends, contribute to the development of technical standards, and mentor junior engineers. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively are essential for this role.

In this role, you will provide solutions to wide-ranging technical problems that are imaginative, thorough, practical, and consistent with organizational objectives. Under general direction, you will independently determine and develop approaches to solutions while serving as the owner of discrete technical packages as a Responsible Engineer (RE). You will work across all technical disciplines, providing guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers to foster their professional growth.

Frequent communication outside of Sierra Space regarding routine business will be an essential part of the role. Your responsibilities will include designing and analyzing propulsion systems and components, conducting performance testing and validation of propulsion systems, and developing and implementing technical standards and best practices. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, you will ensure project success by preparing technical reports and documentation and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.

About You

Our mission is driven by an unyielding commitment to advancing space-based technology in service of our customers and safeguarding national security. We seek individuals who are passionate about innovating beyond boundaries and relentlessly pursuing solutions that protect, preserve and empower - to join us in this critical mission.

We're looking for team members who align with our values, mission and goals - while also meeting the minimum qualifications below. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Requires bachelor's degree in a related field (or equivalent work experience in lieu of degree or master's +3 yrs experience).

* Typically, 5+ years of related experience.

* Expertise in Propulsion engineering.

* Experience managing discrete technical packages as a Responsible Engineer (RE).

* Complete understanding and application of technical principles, standards, theories, and concepts.

* General knowledge of related disciplines.

* Ability to travel up to 25% during test cycles (several months per year); minimal travel required during non-test periods.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Strong background in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and combustion processes.

* Familiarity with propulsion system integration and performance optimization.

* Proficiency with propulsion system testing, in both test planning and test execution.

* Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) tools such as Abaqus or NASTRAN.

* Experience with system modeling software such as SINDA/FLUINT or Simscape.

* Experience with propulsion system design and analysis tools such as ANSYS Fluent, CFX, or similar CFD software.

* Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to propulsion systems, such as NASA, FAA, or DoD standards.

* Proficiency in programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, or C++ for simulation and data analysis.

* Strong communication skills and drive to close actions.
