Position Summary

This supervisor position is responsible for the oversight of the Regional Structures Inspection and Maintenance Unit B in the Structures Maintenance Section of the Bureau of Structures (BOS). This position operates independently and reports to the Chief of Structures Maintenance working with minimal supervision. This position is responsible for general oversight of the inspection and maintenance program for the structures in the jurisdiction of the Madison, La Crosse, and Waukesha offices.

This position will communicate with partners outside of BOS, including those within other Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) bureaus and regions, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), county personnel, and engineering consulting firms regarding civil and structural engineering programs, policies, and procedures. This position also coordinates with the other BOS Maintenance Section supervisors to promote consistent process and procedure across the state.

This position requires a background in structures, including an understanding of design and construction concepts, general knowledge regarding structure repair and maintenance, and an understanding of structure inspection. Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills are required. As the supervisor of a unit, the ability to effectively prioritize and assign work is important, as well as the ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and initiatives that will be active concurrently within the unit.

This position also has a role in policy discussions and decisions, and thus requires the ability to effectively develop written policy documents and communicate them to the appropriate parties. These policies may be published in the WisDOT Bridge Manual, Structures Inspection Manual, or other resources.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range 81-30 with an annual salary of $115,690 - $122,034, plus excellent benefits. Plus, an additional $2,080 per year for a Professional Engineer License.

A twelve-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Special Requirements

* This position requires WisDOT Certified Inspection Team Leader and Inspection Program Manager credentials, or ability to obtain both within 6 months of hire.

* This position requires the ability to frequently travel statewide with some overnight stays at remote locations.

Standby Requirement:

* This position is required to serve in a rotating formal standby status as a member of the BOS Technical Expert Response team responding to emergency situations involving structures (i.e., flood events, bridge damage, etc.).

Bridge Inspector

Special Requirements

* Certified Bridge Inspector per WisDOT Structure Inspection Manual.

* Nonredundant Steel Tension Member (NSTM) bridge inspection training/endorsement.

* Ability to frequently travel on an independent basis, such as traveling 3 to 5 days a week to multiple locations in one day.

* Ability to work outdoors in conditions of heat, cold, humidity, dust, and to walk over rough terrain.

* Ability to lift and carry objects, such as tools or materials.

* Ability to work outside of normal working hours.

* Ability to work in high volume traffic conditions.

* Ability to work in or near water, including safely working from a boat.

* Bridge inspection requires a level of physical agility and strength, plus the ability to work at heights up to several hundred feet above ground level safely. Access to inspection areas is gained by entering small access hatches and climbing or descending ladders and also requires crawling on beams and piers. Safety equipment including harnesses and special self-contained breathing equipment may be required.

Some inspections require entering and riding in a special bucket suspended underneath the structure from a hydraulic boom on special bridge inspection machines known as a "Snooper" and "Reach-All".
