The Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District is currently recruiting for a Project Engineer Level I or II (Dependent on candidates' qualifications)
Under close supervision of the Engineering Manager, the Project Engineer I supports the implementation of engineering projects and the overall long‑term reliability of District infrastructure. This position helps support sustainable solutions for a variety of infrastructure projects including the planning, design, and construction. Projects are wide‑ranging and require problem‑solving and working together to find solutions. The Project Engineer I works closely with stakeholders including staff in operations, maintenance, planning and engineering to analyze needs and plan solutions.
This position will conduct planning, design, bidding, construction inspection, asset commissioning and overall project management activities associated with capital improvement projects, including projects at the treatment plant, at District pump stations, and elsewhere within the collection system. This position will work with external stakeholders as needed to address impacts of District projects on customer communities.
The person in this role is expected to remain up to date and current on new developments in the field of wastewater and contribute that knowledge during planned infrastructure projects as well as during day‑to‑day operations. This position will collaborate with stakeholders and cross‑functional teams to meet standards and guidelines, have a growth mindset to a multi‑faced and mission‑driven operation while having a focus on maintaining a positive work culture.
ProjectEngineer II
Under general supervision of the Engineering Manager, the Project Engineer II executes capital improvement and engineering projects to support the overall long‑term reliability of District infrastructure. ProjectEngineer 1 – Responsibilities and Tasks
35% – Support Capital Improvement Project Management & Design
- Prepare and/or review planning and design reports
- Prepare and/or review contract drawings and technical specifications
- Learn to lead capital improvement projects from inception to completion, ensuring timelines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
- Conduct project advertising and bidding, including pre‑bid meetings, review of bids, and recommendations of contract award
- Manage the financial aspects associated with District projects, including tracking project costs from consultants and contractors.
- Administer professional service contracts with consultants, including developing Requests for Proposals, assistance with selection of consultants and coordination of the work performed by consultants.
- Work with other Departments at the District (Operations & Maintenance, Planning, and Communications) to move projects forward
- Assist in land issues, including obtaining easements from private and public landowners
