Job Description
A STS Tax Manager, State and Local Taxation (SALT) advises clients on tax implications related to their business objectives, recommends alternate courses of action, and identifies different methods of complying with tax regulations. The role also encompasses marketing, networking, and business development within the manager’s area of experience and specialization, while recognizing potential changes in tax policy and applying new policies to tax compliance.
The SALT Manager collaborates with Core Tax Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide SALT expertise to clients.
- Research: Identifies complex situations requiring research, outlines issues, and selects appropriate sources. Analyzes researched facts and composes a detailed report of findings. Develops relationships with in‑state and out‑of‑state Department of Tax (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). of Revenue (DOR) personnel.
- Tax Compliance: Conducts detailed reviews of tax returns to identify significant state tax issues, composes responses to notices from state taxing authorities, and provides assistance with exam support.
- Tax Consulting: Drafts tax memorandums, opinions, and other documentation on various tax issues; applies applicable state tax consulting sub‑specialties; determines the tax planning process; ensures engagement letters are adopted; manages engagements; assists in developing consultative selling strategies; manages client expectations.
- Tax Controversy: Represents clients before any tax authority on contested issues.
- Tax‑Related Software: Utilizes GoSystems, tax research databases, and other tax‑related software to complete assigned tasks.
- Tax Specialization: Provides technical client service to multi‑state companies with state and local tax issues; negotiates settlements, voluntary disclosure agreements, and represents clients in state tax audits; drafts technical memoranda on state and local tax issues.
- Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS
109: Prepares tax accrual work papers. - ASC
174‑10: Understands and applies industry standards and firm policies related to FAS 109, FIN
48, FAS5 for sales tax and unclaimed properties. - Strategy Development: Reviews studies of tax implications to identify alternative actions; develops new or improved ideas to advance client, firm, or personnel positions; researches potential tax strategies; suggests marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
- Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises day‑to‑day workload of SALT Senior Associates, Associates and Interns; ensures training on all relevant tax software; evaluates performance and assists in goal development; delivers periodic performance feedback and completes evaluations; acts as career advisor.
- Other Duties: Oversees project and engagement work; reviews work product; maintains client and internal relationships; encourages team environment and professional development; serves as primary contact on engagements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or other relevant field required.
- Master’s degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. preferred.
- More than five (5) years of prior experience in state and local/multistate taxation required.
- Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis required.
- Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions preferred.
- Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations and partnerships preferred.
- CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word.
- Exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools preferred.
