The School of Medicine and Public Health’s Office of Fiscal Affairs provides essential fiscal and administrative support to over 50 departments, centers, and institutes, managing various funding types including grants and gifts. This Accountant I role is crucial for ensuring accurate financial management and compliant transaction processing across SMPH departments.

The position serves as a primary resource for financial reporting, transaction processing, and providing expert guidance on UW-Madison’s financial policies.

• Mission:
  Ensure accurate and compliant financial recording and reporting for SMPH departments by providing financial management and transaction processing support.

• Post Award Management:
  Manages post-award requirements and processes, answering questions related to accounting for sponsored funding and assisting with award/grant closeouts.
• Financial Reporting:
  Organizes, prepares, and updates basic financial statements, monthly and year-end journal entries, accounts, ledgers, and reports within an automated financial system.
• Transaction Processing:
  Prepares and/or approves financial transactions and payments, ensuring accurate recording and compliance with UW policies and procedures.
• Financial Analysis:
  Prepares and analyzes financial data, reports, and records, identifying discrepancies and recommending solutions as needed.
• Policy Guidance:
  Answers questions and provides accounting-related information to internal and external stakeholders, advising on UW-Madison’s financial policies and procedures.

• Background:
  Associate’s Degree (preferred) in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, combined with professional experience in these fields.
• Experience:
  
  At least two years of professional experience in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, including experience with double-sided accounting entries and accrual-based accounting. Experience utilizing Microsoft Office software, specifically Excel and/or other comparable financial management technologies, to maintain accurate financial records.
• Skills:
  
  Ability to apply core accounting principles, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, effective written and verbal communication, strong attention to detail for accurate reporting, and adaptability to manage workload and meet deadlines.
• Bonus:
  Knowledge of post award management requirements, ability to analyze financial data for strategic financial management, proficiency in UW financial systems (Workday, WISER, UW Purchasing), and experience in Research Administration.
