Summary
This Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) – Computed Tomography (CT) position is assigned to Diagnostic Imaging at Madison, WI, VHA. Applicants who do not meet the requirements for GS‑10 (USD 84,959–110,441) may be selected for GS‑05 through GS‑09. Pay ranges are: GS‑05 USD 56,061–72,880; GS‑06 USD 59,428–77,256; GS‑07 USD 64,443–83,778; GS‑08 USD 71,368–92,775; GS‑09 USD 78,827–102,481.
Qualifications- Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
- Position applies to GS‑05 through GS‑10 levels.
- United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy).
- English language proficiency, spoken and written, as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7402(d) – and § 7407(d).
- Certification: must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R).
- Advanced ARRT certification required for assignments that include CT, MRI, or mammography duties performed independently.
- Advanced certification demonstrates independent operation and demonstrated clinical competency in the specialty; the incumbent must have passed the designated examination.
- Advanced education:
Completed a full‑time training course of at least 24 months in a post‑high‑school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate’s degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or another recognized accrediting agency. Applicants must submit transcripts. - Specialized experience: GS‑06 requires at least one year of experience equivalent to the GS‑05 level, including routine and standardized examinations, explaining exams to patients, troubleshooting equipment, reporting malfunctions, assisting higher‑graded technicians, and knowledge of technique standards, anatomy, and positioning.
- GS‑07 requires at least one year of experience equivalent to the GS‑06 level, with clinical competencies plus either one full academic year of graduate education leading to a degree in radiography or a related field, or completion of an advanced registry program plus a 4‑year baccalaureate degree in radiography.
- GS‑08 requires at least one year of experience equivalent to the GS‑07 level, providing services in specialized areas of radiologic technology, checking system operation, calibrating parameters, understanding clinical records, monitoring patient physiologic changes, and communicating with the radiologist.
- GS‑09 requires at least one year of experience equivalent to the GS‑08 level; DRTs are fully functional as advanced DRTs, carrying out assigned tasks independently, performing complex imaging procedures, and basic quality‑management duties.
- GS‑10 requires at least one year of experience equivalent to the GS‑09 level, with strong specialty‑modality knowledge of cross‑sectional anatomy, advanced imaging software, radiation‑protection standards, physics concepts, and positioning skills for complex studies.
- The DRT will provide professional care 100% of the time within the specialized assignment.
- Position is fully flexible, supporting both regular tour and off‑tour responsibilities for routine and non‑routine clinical care.
- Understand basic technique standards for minimum radiographic exposure.
- Coordinate a variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative to effectively diagnose patients.
- Review and evaluate anatomy, positioning, and patient‑safety procedures in the assigned modality.
- Assess the technical adequacy of digital images and adjust image quality as needed.
- Explain and differentiate contrast material requirements for the requested exam.
- Check imaging systems for operation and assess performance based on established guidelines.
- Monitor patients for physiologic changes during procedures and keep the radiologist informed.
- Balance patient and staff needs while performing complex scans and procedures.
- Perform basic first aid and basic life‑support practices related to radiography.
- Implement and maintain radiation‑protection standards, monitoring dose.
