Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)Job Summary:
The Firefighter/EMT at Madison County Fire Department (MCFD) serves as a vital front-line responder dedicated to the protection of life, property, and the environment. Duties/Responsibilities:
- Represent MCFD with professionalism, integrity, and pride at all times, including public events and interagency collaborations.
- Demonstrate and promote positive, effective communication with peers, supervisors, the Fire Chief, the public, and collaborating agencies.
- Actively participate in MCFD meetings, training sessions, and departmental initiatives.
- Understand and adhere to all MCFD rules, policies, and safety protocols, enforcing them as appropriate.
- Maintain a high level of physical fitness, readiness, and situational awareness on every shift.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Respond to emergency calls including fires, medical incidents, rescues, hazardous materials, and public assistance requests.
- Provide prompt and competent pre‑hospital medical care within the scope of EMT licensure.
- Maintain First Responder EMS kits and medical equipment; ensure cleanliness, functionality, and readiness at all times.
- Participate in regular fire and EMS training; maintain state‑required certifications, including EMT license and BLS certification.
- Perform fireground operations such as search and rescue, fire attack, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul.
- Contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of fire stations, apparatus, and operational equipment.
- Support fire prevention and public education initiatives within the community.
- Execute assignments from the Fire Chief with professionalism and attention to detail.
- High school diploma or GED
- State‑certified EMT (Basic or higher)
- No felony convictions or disqualifying misdemeanors (as defined by law)
- Ability to lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 125 lbs (250 lbs with assistance)
- Physically and mentally capable of operating in high‑stress and hazardous environments, including extreme heat, cold, darkness, and moisture
- Completion of state‑approved Basic Firefighter course
- Knowledge of EMT protocols and procedures
- Familiarity with HIPAA regulations, patient confidentiality, and medical legal standards (including living wills and DNR)
- Previous experience with multi‑agency response operations is a plus
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Thorough understanding of fire service and EMS practices, protocols, and equipment
- Self‑motivated with the ability to multi‑task and prioritize in fast‑paced environments
- Strong judgment, situational awareness, and decision‑making under pressure
- Team‑oriented with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Familiar with standard safety procedures, operational protocols, and emergency response tactics
- Proficient in radio communication and documentation procedures
Physical Demands:
- Requires frequent standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, and operating heavy tools or machinery
- Must be able to lift and move up to 150 pounds independently and heavier loads with assistance
- Must have adequate visual acuity, including close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception
