Position Summary:

The Accounting and HR Specialist provides professional support for both the Finance and Human Resources departments by coordinating day-to-day accounting and HR functions. This position is responsible for processing financial transactions, supporting payroll and benefits administration, maintaining employee records, coordinating recruiting and onboarding activities, and ensuring accurate documentation and compliance with organizational policies.

Providing a full range of administration and organizational support, this person must be able to interact with all levels of the organization, respond well to pressure, be resourceful and efficient, and maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. Expert-level written and verbal communication skills, strong decision-making ability, and attention to detail are equally important.

Job Type: Exempt/Salaried
Salary Range: $40,000-$55,000/Annually
Expected hours: 37.50/Weekly
Location: Madison, WI

Duties & Responsibilities:

Accounting (Approximately 50%)
  • Manage all aspects of the Accounts Payable subsidiary ledger in accordance with the Council’s Policies and Procedures Manual, including processing vendor invoices and preparing weekly disbursements.
  • Manage all aspects of the Accounts Receivable subsidiary ledger in accordance with the Council’s Policies and Procedures Manual, including processing cash receipts, generating customer invoices, and overseeing collection activities.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing processes through the preparation of journal entries and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
  • Assist with the preparation of financial reports, annual budgets, and audit schedules.
  • Support compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate financial records and supporting documentation.
Human Resources (Approximately 40%)
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for employee questions regarding policies, procedures, benefits, and workplace practices.
  • Support employee engagement initiatives and assist in addressing employee concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintain accurate employee records and HR databases, including processing personnel actions related to hiring, promotions, transfers, status changes, and terminations.
  • Maintain employment records and documentation, including job descriptions, performance evaluations, benefits records, I-9 forms, and other required personnel files.
