Job SummaryUniversity Housing Facilities is looking for Custodians to join our 1st and 2nd shift teams. Custodians work together in teams to help keep spaces welcoming, safe, and clean for residents, staff, and guests.
Key Job Responsibilities- Communicate with residents and guests to address needs and service requests.
- Complete work in occupied or vacant residence halls and dining spaces.
- Demonstrate and role model exceptional customer service.
- Promote and participate in a collaborative team environment.
- Maintain and implement prescribed cleaning standards.
- Provide support and assistance during implementation of plans and procedures in emergencies.
- Prepare, service, and maintain residence hall and dining facilities.
- Monitor and secure facility interior and exterior entrances, reporting issues to appropriate entities.
- Assist residents and guests with event set‑up and take‑down.
- Utilize basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned areas and remove waste and recyclables.
- Document and report repairs, violations, and pest‑control needs.
- Maintain organization of supply areas and equipment, document inventory, and request additional supplies as needed.
- Maintain clean and clear walkways to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice.
- Multiple vacancies may be available.
- 1st shift positions: 7:30 am – 4:00 pm, Monday‑Friday, 8‑hour shifts (40 hrs/week). Some positions include scheduled shifts every other weekend. Some flexibility may be possible.
- 2nd shift positions: 3:00 pm – 1:30 am, 4 days/week, 10‑hour shifts (40 hrs/week), including rotating holidays and shifts every other weekend. Some flexibility may be possible.
- Work schedule will be set with selected finalist(s) at the time of offer and may change with operations and position expectations.
- $17.00 /hour with a competitive retirement and benefits package, including vacation, holidays, and paid time off. Benefits information can be found at This is a full‑time position.
- University Staff also earn additional money when working at night (6:00 pm – 6:00 am) and on weekends (Saturday and Sunday). Additional $2.50 /hour for nighttime work on weekdays, up to $2.50 /hour for daytime weekend work, and up to $3.30 /hour for nighttime weekend work.
- Current UW‑Madison employees may be eligible to be hired up to their current rate of compensation based on qualifications.
- 3 months of previous cleaning, custodial, hospitality, or related experience.
- 6 months of previous continuous employment.
- English proficiency with the ability to speak, read, write, and understand verbal instructions.
- A valid driver's license that meets UW Risk Management standards.
