Material Handler, Forklift Operator
Job Summary
The Material Picker/Handler loads, unloads, and moves materials and finished goods in the plant or on plant grounds with industrial lift trucks and other material handling equipment. The Material Picker/Handler receives specific work assignments under general supervision and resolves most problems with limited supervisory assistance. The Material Picker/Handler must always use extreme care when operating equipment and is expected to practice and adhere to the Company’s Six Sigma principles.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Pick and put away material for specific jobs and support production to prevent work stoppages.
- Support and maintain all processes associated with the Material Picker/Handler picking position.
- Review job orders, determine specific handling requirements.
- Move materials from storage or work sites to designated areas using power equipment or by hand.
- Load/unload materials onto or from pallets, trays, racks, shelves, or vehicles.
- Install strapping, bracing, or padding to prevent in‑transit movement or damage.
- Accurately count and record units/parts moved or handled; attach material/product identification tags/labels.
- Interpret basic drawings for part identification.
- Use ERP system to lookup/review and enter data into handheld scanners and computer terminals; report inventory inaccuracies to the materials lead.
- Assemble crates and pallets for material/product storage and/or shipment.
- Cleans and maintain work area daily; completes material handling equipment safety check lists and maintains other tools/equipment.
- Work safely at all times.
- Ensure all work complies with and adheres to IEA’s ISO and quality standards.
- Maximum lifting requirement: 100 pounds (infrequently), 50 pounds (occasionally), 25 pounds (frequently).
- Maximum moving requirement: 300 pounds with assistance.
- Maintain physical condition necessary for frequent lifting, carrying, standing, sitting (operating forklift), walking, climbing, crouching, stooping, squatting, and twisting upper body.
- Work at heights up to 20 feet.
- Vision requirements: close, distance, and peripheral vision; depth perception.
Work location:
Metal fabrication/assembly shop and indoor/outdoor storage areas.
Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts/equipment including overhead cranes, sharp/heavy materials, inclement weather.
Personal protective equipment requirement: safety glasses, gloves, and safety shoes.
Qualifications- Ability to read and understand job requirements, shop drawings, and blueprints.
- Ability to operate industrial equipment including lift trucks, power hoists, etc.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and the ability to follow safe work practices.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with others.
- Experience:
One or more years of material handling or related experience is desirable. - Education:
Related technical training (high school or beyond) is desirable but not essential. - Certificates/Licenses:
Forklift operator certification.
