School Nurse - Hawthorne - 0.5 FTE - 26-27 SY
Location: Health Services, Doyle Administration Building
Compensation: Minimum $66,597 (25-26 Salary Schedule)
Contract Length: 192 days
Employment Type: Exempt
The school nurse is a core member of the school’s integrated pupil services team. This team collaborates with teachers, administrators, families, and community partners to design and deliver a comprehensive, coordinated student support system. The nurse advocates for educational equity, promotes whole‑child development, and leads systemic change within the school community.
Integrated Student Services Practices- Data‑based decision making for planning, delivery, and evaluation of programs and services
- Communication, consultation, and collaboration with students, families, staff, and community partners
- Advocacy and leadership to enable each student to be a healthy and successful learner
- Adhering to professional standards that are respectful, confidential, individualized, developmentally appropriate, and culturally competent
- Staying current with professional learning to maintain and develop competency reflecting evidence‑based best practice
- Lead development and evaluation of school‑based health policies and procedures
- Participate in the Student Support and Intervention Team (SSIT) and School‑based Leadership Team (SBLT)
- Develop Individualized Care Plans (IHP) and monitor interventions and outcomes
- Develop Emergency Health Plans (EHP) for staff and students with life‑threatening health conditions
- Provide training and monitor the quality and safety of nursing interventions delegated to non‑nurse staff
- Serve on Individual Education Plan (IEP) and 504 teams
- Educate staff about chronic illness implications for school success
- Promote attendance and engagement for students with chronic health conditions
- Plan and implement transitions for students with IHPs and EHPs between environments
- Partner with families and coordinate primary and specialty care
- Consult and refer to community partners for continued health care of students
- Facilitate enrollment in Badger Care for eligible students and enroll eligible students in Primary Access for Kids
- Provide formal classroom instruction (e.g., human growth and development)
- Provide informal instruction during health office visits, including self‑advocacy skills and health care literacy
- Implement health promotion activities and tier‑2 group interventions
- Monitor environmental safety (playground, air quality, communicable disease hazards)
- Participate in planning for prevention of school violence, alcohol and drug use, and bullying
- Ensure student compliance with Wisconsin immunization requirements
- Monitor and manage episodes of building‑based communicable disease per district guidelines
- Lead health screening programs (vision, hearing, dental, mental health)
- Serve on the school crisis response team and respond to all health emergencies
- Participate in emergency preparedness planning
- Develop evacuation plans for students with mobility needs or other individualized accommodations
- Collaborate on violence risk assessments (VRA) and suicide risk assessments (SRA)
- Provide emergency treatment for anaphylaxis and severe asthma episodes
- Direct provision of care by nurse assistant

- Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing (NLNAC or CCNE) with official transcripts
- Current, valid registered nurse license in Wisconsin (Chapter 441, Wisconsin Statutes; N2.04 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code)
- Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) nurse license within 3 years of employment
- Current CPR/AED certification
- Basic Emergency Care Course completed within 6 months of employment or within 3 years prior
- Experience working cross‑culturally and/or commitment to improving cultural competence
