Overview
Dane County Land and Water Resources in Madison, WI has current vacancies for the Limited Term Employee (LTE) Restoration and Land Management Specialist II position.
Note: Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week. For the 2026 budget year, there is a 1% reduction in wages. This is already reflected in the hourly wage above.

Under the direction of the Botanist/Naturalist, lead and monitor teams of LTEs and volunteers responsible for completing ecological restoration and land management activities on public lands throughout Dane County.
Examples of Duties- Direct LTE natural areas restoration crew and assist with the training of volunteers and LTE staff in the proper use and maintenance of equipment.
- Assist with and/or lead prescribed burns including preparing units and post-burn mop-up/monitoring.
- Monitor work through all phases of restoration. Evaluate existing vegetation and site conditions.
- Conduct invasive species removal through multiple methods including herbicide application.
- Provide project communication through updates, personal contacts, notices and meetings with stakeholders.
- Maintain work task logs and herbicide use reports.
- Collect, process/clean, and plant native seed.
- Work cooperatively with volunteers, WI DNR staff, park groups, adjacent landowners, and local municipalities.
- Ensure project implementation remains compliant with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Assist in various wildlife surveys including summer deer observation and waterfowl banding activities.
- Operate and maintain land management equipment including chainsaws, powered cutters, mowers, UTV/ATVs, sprayers and drip torches.
Educational and experience requirements: Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to one (1) year in Natural Resource Management.
Special RequirementsSpecial Requirements: Applicants must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. A valid driver’s license and a good driving record required. Final candidate(s) will be subject to passing a thorough driving record background check.
Certifications and Licenses- Certified Pesticide Applicators License in category 3.0 Turf & Landscaping or 6.0 Right of Way & Natural Areas
- National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) S-130 and S-190 fire fighter certification
- Chainsaw safety and operation training
