Job Summary
The Veterinary Technician Supervisor will provide training and supervision of Anesthesia and Surgical Veterinary Technicians, including Veterinary Technician 2's training to become Anesthesia or Surgical Veterinary Technicians. The Veterinary Technician Supervisor will be responsible for ensuring work is performed efficiently and thoroughly. The incumbent will evaluate the needs of each working area and adjust the workload and tasks of each technician as necessary to ensure the highest quality of animal care.
Work may be performed at any of our 3 locations across the UW-Madison campus, including our Blue Mounds facility. Travel among facilities across campus may be required daily. Additionally, this position will function at the level of a Surgical Veterinary Technician 3.
- Schedules logistics and secures resources to ensure adequate staffing, equipment, and supplies to ensure optimal operation of a designated animal care unit
- Prepares, completes, and documents technical animal care procedures, assessments, and medication administration according to established care plans and medical necessity
- Develops animal care procedures, protocols, and affiliated reference materials to ensure compliance with established rules and regulations
- Provides nursing animal care for patients and works alongside other veterinary technicians in the unit
- Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full‑time equivalent (FTE) employees

Compensation: Minimum hourly rate starting at $30.00/hr
- Certification as Wisconsin Veterinary Technician
- Minimum of three years experience working as a Veterinary Technician, preferably in an animal laboratory animal setting
- Previous experience in a supervisory role as demonstrated through previous work experience
- Extensive experience in administering anesthesia, monitoring equipment, administering fluids, as well as monitoring the recovery of animals, and the ability to train these skills and techniques
- Incumbent must have prior anesthesia experience in a veterinary clinic or animal laboratory environment
Incumbent must possess: excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with other WNPRC staff, animal research facility staff, and investigator staff; conflict resolution skills; knowledge to perform clinical triage and initial emergency intervention; proficient computer skills in MS Word, spreadsheets, and data entry; ability to learn, use and adapt to new computer technologies, including use of electronic medical records programs;
working knowledge of research animal rules and regulations; ability to effectively lead and utilize supervisory techniques and methods; adept problem‑solving skills to analyze and resolve issues that may arise; knowledge of effective instructional techniques used in teaching professional veterinary students and veterinary technicians; the ability to remain calm during urgent medical situations; and the ability to work effectively with a high level of independence.
