This Client‑Based Research I position works closely with clinic staff to recruit and consent subjects to our protocol. The incumbent examines fresh tissue samples and determines adequacy for tissue banking and research use. In compliance with national standards and study guidelines, the role handles fresh tissue appropriately for storage and shipping, including snap freezing tissue for banking, sending fresh tissue to researchers, tissue disaggregation, and freezing cell suspensions.
In conjunction with clinical research Disease‑Oriented Teams (DOTs) involved in studying these specimens, the researcher maintains the tissue repository and extracts the associated data. The position catalogs tissue specimens into the Tissue Resource database and maintains records for individual protocols, handling procedures and shipping records. The incumbent assists with the development and review of protocols associated with specimen storage and distribution.
The successful incumbent has excellent communication skills to work closely with faculty pathologists, pathology trainees, pathology physician assistants, operating room personnel, and other physicians and scientists. The position ensures that all clinical and laboratory research activity adheres to Federal, University of Wisconsin, and UWCCC policies, procedures and requirements.
Location- Onsite, at a designated campus work location.

- Recruit and consent subjects to research protocols.
- Examine fresh tissue samples and determine adequacy for tissue banking and research use.
- Handle fresh tissue for storage and shipping (snap freezing, sending to researchers, disaggregation, freezing cell suspensions).
- Maintain the tissue repository and extract associated data.
- Catalog tissue specimens into the Tissue Resource database and maintain records for protocols, handling procedures and shipping.
- Assist with the development and review of specimen storage and distribution protocols.
- Review and edit research protocols under general supervision.
- Identify concerns in protocols and recommend solutions to leadership.
- Prepare reports and materials and disseminate information to appropriate entities.
- Assist with the development of research methodologies and procedures according to client‑based objectives and specifications.
- Train individuals and groups on equipment operations, research protocols and laboratory techniques.
- Collect and analyze research data, conduct experiments and interviews, and document results according to established policies and procedures.
- Travel is required; valid driver's license required. Employees may use their own transportation or receive approval for University Car Fleet usage.
- Excellent analytical, communication and organizational skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Experience with sample collection and sample processing.
- Experience with quality assurance and good laboratory practices.
- Experience with databases, including data entry, maintenance and generating reports.
- Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- TB testing required at time of hire.
- U.S. work authorization required.
