Exact Sciences is a company dedicated to preventing, detecting, and guiding the treatment of cancer. We are seeking a Bioinformatician II to support our research and delivery of data-driven insights.
Position OverviewThe Bioinformatician II will work on multiple projects analyzing biomedical data by applying existing tools and informatics resources. This role will be responsible for maintaining, testing, optimizing, and customizing existing bioinformatic pipelines for NGS data and data tracking/delivery to customers.
Essential Duties- Implement, test, maintain, and customize available or known informatics resources and scientific software/data sources in multiple programming languages/platforms for research support.
- Develop front ends for other analysis tools, visualize and compile results, facilitate routine data processing, migration, organization, and management tasks, and build project-specific workflows that implement automated analysis steps.
- Investigate, customize, and prototype new bioinformatics resources and scientific software for biomedical data processing.
- Require skills in multiple programming languages, databases, computational methods, scientific computing, large-scale data analysis, and heterogeneous biomedical data from multiple sources.
- Use software engineering skills to create reusable, modular, tested, version-controlled, shared-repository oriented, professional-quality informatics/software/database resources.
- Design, prototype, evaluate innovative computational algorithms, data analysis, and statistical methods for biomedical data processing, interpretation, and knowledge mining.
- Suggest and explore alternative multiple data processing approaches.
- Follow scientific literature and manuscripts, investigate new biomedical data processing methods, trends, technologies, and paradigms relevant to biomedical informatics, provide feedback toward scientific findings, and contribute toward manuscripts, grants, research proposals, and research planning.
- Attend, contribute to, and present at internal and external scientific meetings and conferences.
- Manage multiple bioinformatics collaborations and projects, and mentor junior staff.
- Strategic planning, organization, management, utilization, and optimization of existing and future bioinformatics resources, skills, and needs.
- Interact with PIs, researchers, and other bioinformaticians to align and guide the bioinformatics activities to maximize the organization’s competitive advantage in biomedical research.
- Interact with other research divisions, computing infrastructure staff, and outside academic or industrial partners.
- Excel in communication and maintain a strong desire to interact with researchers carrying out cutting-edge biomedical research.

- Travel approximately 5% of the working time away from the work location, which may include overnight or weekend travel.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Bioengineering, Computational Biology, or a related field.
- At least 2 years of job-related experience in an academic or industrial applied research environment focused on biomedical data analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and implement computational algorithms, statistical analysis methods, and custom data analysis software.
- Demonstrated proficiency in software development in multiple programming languages such as Python and Java and related derivatives.
- Demonstrated proficiency in downloading, learning, and applying software and database resources for custom analysis and building workflows.
- Proficiency with Linux or UNIX-based systems and shell scripting.
- Proficiency in analyzing gene expression, genotyping, sequencing, CGH, or other relevant biomedical data and using various biomedical databases.
- Proficiency with scientific computing and data visualization tools such as MATLAB or R, and an understanding of basic statistics.
- Proficiency in software engineering processes including version control, backup, documentation, testing, and validation.
- Familiarity with large-scale data analysis and the use of high-performance computing systems and parallel programming.
- Proficiency with NGS workflow processes and languages such as Cromwell/WDL and Snakemake.
- Proficiency with cloud computing platforms, e.g., DNAnexus.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
