Job Summary

The Topkara Laboratory in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Medicine and Public Health seeks a Scientist II to investigate transcriptional regulatory mechanisms of heart failure and myocardial recovery. Using cardiac tissue from patients with left ventricular assist device implantation and cardiac transplantation, the Labs employ high‑throughput sequencing, computational genomics, human iPSC‑derived cardiomyocytes, and genetically engineered mouse models to discover and characterize gene targets for heart failure.

Current projects focus on the role of non‑coding RNAs, RNA binding proteins, and RNA splicing regulation in heart failure and myocardial recovery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a unit subject matter expert and liaison to internal and external stakeholders, providing advanced information and representing the laboratory’s interests.
  • Attend and assist with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations to support professional development and dissemination of research findings.
  • Collect and analyze complex research data, conduct experiments and interviews, and document results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision.
  • Write or assist in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding.
  • Identify research problems and develop complex research methodologies and procedures.
  • Conduct literature reviews, prepare reports and materials, and disseminate information to appropriate entities.
  • Supervise the day‑to‑day activities of a research unit as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Expertise in cellular and molecular biology techniques, cell culture and differentiation, and genetically engineered mouse models.
  • Research publications and presentations.
  • Experience in cardiovascular research and cardiac phenotyping.
  • Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, Healthcare, or a closely related field required by start date.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Background in bioinformatics of high‑throughput genetic data analysis, including RNA sequencing and/or GWAS.
Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary $64,000 annually; negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Eligible for benefits including generous vacation, holidays, and sick leave; competitive insurance plans; and retirement benefits.
