Job SummaryThe population genetics research lab of John Pool seeks a research staff member to lead a project documenting hidden variation within key laboratory strains of the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. The hired individual will lead a research project based on fly stocks received from labs around the world, conducting a series of trait assays on them to better understand their variability (in coordination with undergraduate lab members), and performing DNA extractions to prepare these fly stocks for genomic sequencing.
The hired individual will also help our lab manager with a range of research support tasks including preparing fly medium.
- Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
- Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
- Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
- Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
- Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
- Performs literature reviews and writes reports
Genetics
CompensationMinimum Salary is $45,879.
Final salary will depend on experience and qualifications. - Experience in a biological sciences research laboratory in a staff or student capacity.
- Demonstrated ability to balance and prioritize multiple responsibilities while managing time effectively.
- Evidence of strong communication (oral and written) and collaborative skills.
- Experience working with Drosophila flies or other insects in a laboratory or course setting.
- Experience performing DNA extractions or other molecular lab work.
- Experience and/or coursework related to genetics.
Bachelor's Degree Preferred Minimum In The Biological Sciences
