Your Opportunity

We are seeking an exceptionally talented and enthusiastic entry level Environmental Technician with a keen interest in the natural sciences to join our Wisconsin team out of our Madison office. We are seeking a passionate individual with strong natural resource background ready to assist our project teams with wetland delineations, natural resource permitting, wildlife surveys, plant surveys, ecosystem restoration, erosion control and construction oversight and other opportunities as needed.

The candidate will work closely with project managers, staff scientists and senior scientists to support delivery of environmental studies for projects involving electric transmission lines, natural gas pipelines, wind and solar electric generation facilities, wetland and stream restorations and other projects for private, municipal, state, and federal clients. This is a full-time (40+-hour work week) position. Stantec will be responsible for training and travel expenses.

This position will initially include working in Wisconsin and various locations throughout the Midwest, with future opportunities to work with other Stantec staff around the United States.

Key Responsibilities
  • Wetland and stream delineation and assessments,
  • Vegetation inventories,
  • Wildlife surveys and habitat assessments,
  • Aquatic assessments (lake and stream),
  • Background environmental data reviews,
  • Environmental permit applications,
  • Endangered resource record reviews,
  • Environmental construction monitoring,
  • GPS data collection and mapping support,
  • ArcGIS online mapping and data collection applications,
  • Data collection and analysis, and
  • Preparation of written reports, tables, spreadsheets, databases, and maps for client and regulatory agency review.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline (botany, biology, ecology, natural resources, wildlife biology, or related field) with relevant coursework.
  • An interest in terrestrial and / or aquatic ecosystems, natural resource conservation and enhancement, and the outdoors.
  • Willingness to travel and conduct fieldwork in potentially remote areas for extended periods including overnight travel. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
  • Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day and to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • A positive attitude in strenuous working conditions.
  • Willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work.
  • Experience at working well both in a team atmosphere and independently.
  • Ability to solve problems using critical thinking and to complete tasks with consideration towards the safety of a team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including exceptional MS Office skills.
  • Comfort with computers and iPad GPS units or other similar GPS based survey equipment.
  • Strong note-taking skills and attention to detail.
  • Conscientious, organized, and disciplined behavior.
  • Good driving record and valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Strong wetland delineation and plant and animal identification skills.
  • Field experience in natural resources inventories and surveys.
  • Working knowledge of field sampling techniques.
  • Working understanding of Stantec’s policies and procedures for Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE), including client-specific training (as required).
  • One to three years of experience in the environmental field.
Preferred qualifications
  • Strong wetland delineation and plant and animal identification skills.
  • Field experience in natural resources inventories and surveys.
  • Working knowledge of field sampling techniques.
