Job Summary

This position functions under the supervision of the Chemist Supervisor for Environmental Health Division In organics/Metals Sections. The position has responsibilities, which include testing and participation in method development in the Inorganic Wet Chemistry/Metals areas of the laboratory. This position is responsible for independently preparing and analyzing environmental samples. This position works with the team members to monitor the status of tests in the Wet Chemistry area.

The successful candidate will perform routine analysis on Inorganic/Metals environmental samples with minimal supervision. Work in the laboratory involves the operation and maintenance of flow injection analyzers (FIA), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), graphite furnace atomic absorption GFFA and ion chromatography (IC) instrumentation. Personal initiative, independence, strong technical skills, and collaboration are essential in this role. The employee in this position is expected to use the tools and principles of quality management in performing their daily work including the following:
Demonstrate exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with managers, supervisor, coworkers, and all customers. Provide constructive feedback for the purpose of continuous improvement in a manner that is supportive of the State Laboratory of Hygiene and its mission. Use data collection tools as appropriate. Use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit.

Present ideas, carry out assignments, and provide information as required. Participate in continuous learning through professional development activities.

Primary work hours are 7:45 AM. to 4:30 P.M. Monday through Friday.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Utilizes assigned analytical methods-based quality requirements to verify test result validity and/or meet regulatory compliance - 5%
  • Learn and maintain analysis by participating in Wet Chemistry rotation - 15%
  • Prepares, develops, and conducts chemical research experiments analysis of specimens employing quality control and quality assurance practices - 60%
  • Utilizes, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation and information management systems to meet unit objects in alignment with strategic initiatives - 5%
  • Prepares, reviews, verifies, and reports test result data - 15%

$50,000/year minimum (Depending on qualifications)

Required Qualifications
  • For the Chem I:
    Chemistry college-level laboratory course work required. Analytical laboratory experience preferred.
  • For the Chem II:
    Science college-level laboratory course work required. Two
    -Three years analytical laboratory experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years analytical laboratory experience preferred.
  • Previous experience working in an environmental laboratory setting is highly desired.
  • Experience with FIA, ICP-OES, GFAA IC instrumentation preferred.
Education

At minimum, a Bachelor of Science degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution, is required. An official (or copy of an official) transcript showing conferred degree will be required as a condition of employment. For degrees earned outside of the United States, proof of qualification equivalency is required and must be performed by a nationally recognized organization such as the National Association Credential Evaluation Services, Inc.

(NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE). The candidate is responsible for all expenses related to acquiring and providing proof of qualifications.
