Job Category:

Academic Staff

Employment Type:

Regular

Job Profile:

Chemist I

Job Summary:

This position will work with a team of chemists in the laboratory of the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP), as part of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH), to provide robust precipitation and air chemistry data that supports scientists, policymakers, and environmental monitoring programs across the nation.
The successful candidate will perform routine analysis on thousands of precipitation and passive air samples annually with minimal supervision. Laboratory responsibilities include the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of flow injection analyzers (FIA), segmented flow analyzers (SFA), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), ion chromatography (IC) systems, and pH and conductivity instrumentation. Additional responsibilities will include quality assurance and quality control activities, data review, and participation in laboratory process improvement initiatives.

Success in this role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, initiative, independence, and that ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
An interest in emerging atmospheric pollutants continues to grow, NADP plays an important role in developing new monitoring capabilities and advancing environmental measurement science. The successful candidate may have opportunities to participate in method development, data evaluation, and research projects as the program needs and workloads allow. These efforts often involve collaboration with NADP stakeholders and may include preparation of technical reports, scientific publications, and oral presentations.
Primary work hours are 7:45 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday.
