Overview
The Wisconsin Historical Society is a mission-driven organization that connects people to the past by collecting, preserving, and sharing stories across libraries, archives, museums, and historic sites.
ResponsibilitiesThis 4‑year project position is led by a Field Coordinator and focuses on Geographic Information System (GIS) and illustration work for archaeological and architectural research. Key duties include:
- Prepare, process, and manage GIS/GPS survey and mapping data, digital images, field notes, and standardized forms.
- Maintain WHS‑CRS mapping and illustration standards and troubleshoot project‑specific challenges.
- Research and develop new tools and techniques to improve mapping and illustration processes.
- Organize and store completed GIS metadata, illustrations, and digital images.
- Participate in field research on archaeological and/or architectural sites under the guidance of the Field Coordinator or Director.
This position works in the office or in the field.
QualificationsApplicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Coursework in Geographic Information Systems, Cultural Resources, Geography, Geology, or Civil Engineering.
- Proficiency with ESRI‑based ArcGIS programs.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office.
- Use of GPS surveying tools such as Trimble GPS.
- Knowledge of GIS principles, methods, and techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering plans, topographical maps, aerial photographs, historical plats, and atlases.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Strong communication skills with diverse professionals.
- Experience representing information visually and completing illustration projects on schedule.
- Record‑keeping skills in a consistent and usable format.
- Experience in historic preservation field research.
- Familiarity with federal and state preservation standards, guidelines, and practices.
The hourly rate is $24.00–$28.00, and the position is classified under pay schedule 13, range 04.
LocationOffice-based with field opportunities as needed.
