Job Summary:

The Department of Medical Physics is seeking a Radiation Metrology Specialist to support our brachytherapy well chamber and source calibration efforts and uphold the highest standards of radiological safety. This role will monitor radiation accuracy and safety, perform calibrations of brachytherapy sources, maintain a comprehensive suite of survey meters, and assist with managing the lifecycle of both sealed and unsealed radioactive sources.

Beyond routine operations, the Radiation Metrology Specialist will contribute to research aimed at building a world‑class, activity‑based metrological laboratory.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Calibration of well chambers and radioactive sources
  • Consult department personnel on proper protocol for maintaining laboratory compliance with accrediting organizations
  • Facilitate cooperative research group(s) to improve current and develop new highly sensitive ionizing radiation measurement instrumentation
  • Design, implement, and execute research plans for improving clinical ionizing radiation metrology instrumentation
  • Contribute to the development of radiation dosimetry research through presentations for internal and external audiences
  • Ensure radiation and laboratory safety
  • Provide instruction and technical support on newly developed and existing measurement instrumentation in various environments
Department:

School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Medical Physics, Calibration Laboratory

Medical physics was established as a specialty focus within the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, creating the first and only basic science Department of Medical Physics of its kind in the country. Faculty within the department have a scholarly focus on discoveries and inventions in imaging and therapy systems, that lead to scientific translation into clinical trials or to industrial translation to create products through collaboration or via new venture entrepreneurship.

Medical physics is led by 30 core faculty with 45 affiliate and 14 emeritus faculty members, with many having joint appointments in clinical departments such as Radiology and Human (Radiation) Oncology.

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $72,000 annually but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
  • Experience in experimental laboratory research, with familiarity utilizing liquid radioactive solutions
  • Experience as a radiation safety personnel member at the laboratory level
  • Experience in general laboratory safety regulations and procedures
Education:

Bachelor's Degree Required.
