Job Summary
The Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS) is seeking up to two self‑motivated, collaborative, engaged, and experienced Hydrogeologists who will conduct applied and fundamental research and mapping to improve our understanding of the hydrogeology of Wisconsin. The Hydrogeologist will report to the Director and State Geologist and will require travel and overnight stays to perform research, fieldwork, and outreach across the state.
Responsibilities include an extensive scope of research, field work, data analysis, communication, community service, and mentoring.

Travel ExpectationsEmployees will arrange their own transportation and have a valid driver’s license. The position may require in‑state travel and use of the university vehicle system.

- Ability to stand, walk, and move over uneven ground.
- Manage and conduct applied and fundamental groundwater research, including planning, proposal writing, budgeting, field work, data management, and report/manuscript preparation.
- Perform field work such as well installation, water‑level measurement, streamflow measurement, pumping and slug tests, geophysical measurements, and water sampling.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret hydrogeologic data, develop project‑specific databases, and share data with project cooperators.
- Communicate results through workshops, training sessions, lectures, and peer‑reviewed publications.
- Serve the geologic and hydrogeologic community through peer review, committee service, and outreach to the public.
- Supervise and mentor student employees.
- Collaborate with WGNHS staff and local, state, Tribal, and federal agencies.
- Respond to public inquiries and questions concerning Wisconsin’s geology and hydrogeology.
- Reach a wide audience and ensure access to programs, facilities, and educational services.
- Be responsive to evolving position and program needs and perform additional duties as requested.
The Division of Extension, Natural Resources Institute, Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey seeks two Hydrogeologists.
CompensationThe minimum starting salary is $75,000. Expected starting salary ranges from $75,000 to $100,000, depending on qualifications and experience. The position is advertised with an FTE range of 80–100%. Required Qualifications- Minimum two years of professional experience in hydrogeology, hydrology, or a closely related field.
- Broad training in geological sciences and experience working with subsurface datasets.
- Specialized experience in at least one of the following: applied geophysics, karst/fractured rock systems, hydrostratigraphy, geochemistry, groundwater modeling, or contaminant hydrogeology.
- Experience in project management including budgeting and delivering project products on schedule.
- Experience leading and conducting field‑based hydrologic investigations.
- Skills in presenting hydrological data in maps, cross‑sections, and graphs.
- Ability to write, present, and educate effectively to diverse audiences.
- Experience with hydrogeologic and GIS software, spreadsheets, and graphic analysis.
- Professional, courteous, collaborative, and productive teamwork skills.
- Commitment to developing projects that serve societal needs.
- Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Familiarity with Wisconsin hydrogeology or the Upper Midwest or Great Lakes Region.
- Experience designing applied research programs addressing societal issues relevant to Wisconsin.
- Experience developing, securing, and implementing grant‑funded research.
- Experience supervising and mentoring students.
- Skillful in establishing professional relationships and networks with local, Tribal, and county governments.
