Radiation Dosimetry Engineer

The Department of Medical Physics is seeking a Radiation Calibration Specialist to provide brachytherapy well-chamber and source calibrations and uphold the highest standards of radiological safety. This role will also oversee the calibrations of survey meters, and assist with managing the lifecycle of both sealed and unsealed radioactive sources. Beyond routine operations, the Radiation Calibration Specialist will contribute to research aimed at building a world-class, activity-based calibration laboratory.

This position requires work to be completed onsite, at a designated campus work location.

• Calibration of well chambers and radioactive sources
• Consults with department personnel on proper protocol for maintaining laboratory compliance with accrediting organizations
• Provides instruction and technical support on newly developed and existing measurement instrumentation in various environments
• Radiation and Laboratory safety
• Contributes to the development of radiation dosimetry research through presentations for internal and external audiences
• Facilitates cooperative research group(s) to improve current and develop new highly sensitive ionizing radiation measurement instrumentation
• Designs, implements, and executes research plans for improving clinical ionizing radiation metrology instrumentation

School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Medical Physics, Calibration Laboratory

Medical physics was established as a specialty focus within the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, creating the first and only basic science Department of Medical Physics of its kind in the country. Faculty within the department have a scholarly focus on discoveries and inventions in imaging and therapy systems, that lead to scientific translation into clinical trials or to industrial translation to create products through collaboration or via new venture entrepreneurship.

Medical physics is led by 30 core faculty with 45 affiliate and 14 emeritus faculty members, with many having joint appointments in clinical departments such as Radiology and Human (Radiation) Oncology.

The starting salary for the position is $74,154 annually but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

• Experience in experimental laboratory research, with knowledge of ionizing radiation physics
• Experience in radiation laboratory environment, including working with radiation sources and calibration equipment
• Familiarity utilizing liquid radioactive solutions
• Experience with general laboratory safety regulations and procedures

Bachelor's Degree Required.

University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship and TN visas. The selected applicant will be responsible for ensuring their continuous eligibility to work in the United States (i.e. a citizen or national of the United States, a lawful permanent resident, a foreign national authorized to work in the United States without the need of an employer sponsorship) on or before the effective date of appointment.
