Job Summary

Superintendent's Office – School Security Assistant (SSA)

Salary: $28.72 - $28.72 per hour (26‑27 Salary Schedule)

Purpose of the Position

School Security Assistants (SSAs) are assigned to Madison middle and high schools to support the school principal in providing a safe environment for students and staff. SSAs receive extensive training in conflict resolution, emergency response, first aid/CPR, and legal matters related to the enforcement of the Student Code of Conduct. They work closely with the Madison Police Department, other agencies, and emergency responders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in maintaining order, using crisis intervention techniques to control situations.
  • Assist in investigations and cooperate with law enforcement when necessary.
  • Report and document incidents as directed by school principals and security personnel.
  • Coordinate safety activities on and around the school building and grounds.
  • Provide first aid as needed.
  • Intervene in altercations among students, staff, or the public to maintain safety and security.
  • Participate in emergencies such as fire, evacuation, lockdown, and tornado drills.
  • Testify at hearings, as required.
  • Guide students regarding available support services.
  • Maintain contact records, observation documentation, and a daily log of activities.
  • Supervise school-sponsored bus trips and athletic events as needed.
  • Control and identify loiterers, trespassers, and other unauthorized individuals.
  • Prepare reports on school incidents as directed.
  • Enforce the MMSD Conduct and Discipline Code and other school regulations.
  • Coordinate efforts with Madison Police Department officers, educational resource officers, and detective liaison personnel for hallway supervision.
  • Compile and summarize monthly and year‑to‑date reports.
  • Patrol parking lots, school grounds, hallways, stairwells, doorways, rooms, storage areas, and off‑site locations as directed.
  • Become knowledgeable about security equipment and assist principals and security coordinators with its use.
  • Perform additional duties related to maintaining a safe school environment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment; physical tasks such as walking, running, lifting, climbing, and kneeling.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and the community.
  • Ability to quell physical and verbal altercations between students, staff, or the public.
  • Excellent communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High competency and commitment to student success and safety.
  • Ability to work well under stress and respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Experience working cross‑culturally and/or a commitment to enhancing cultural competence.
  • Successful completion of a pre‑employment physical and comprehensive background check.
  • Ability to write accurate, complete reports.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and insurance for a vehicle.
  • Training and experience in crisis intervention and emergency medical procedures.
  • CPR/AED certification (required).
  • Experience working with middle and high school‑age youth.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior security experience.
  • Knowledge of the juvenile justice system.
Working Conditions
  • Travel to various locations within the district and off‑site meetings may be required.
  • Work may include evenings, nights, and some weekends.
  • Hybrid work flexibility may be available depending on the position’s needs; details discussed during the interview process.
  • School‑based positions require in‑person presence unless otherwise directed by the building principal.
Physical Requirements

The position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds and perform tasks such as walking, sitting, stooping, or reaching in various indoor and outdoor settings. The role may involve standing for extended periods and working in inclement weather or temperature‑variable environments.
