MMSD is seeking highly motivated and energetic applicants who are committed to student success and safety.
" + "Purpose of the Position" + "School Security Assistants (SSAs) are assigned to Madison middle and high schools to work in support of the principal, ensuring a safe environment for students and staff through extensive training in conflict resolution, emergency response, first aid/CPR, and legal matters related to the Student Code of Conduct.
" + "Essential Duties and Responsibilities" + "- " + "
- Assist in maintaining order and utilize crisis intervention techniques to control situations. " + "
- Assist in investigations and cooperate with law enforcement personnel when necessary. " + "
- Report and document incidents as directed by principals and the Security Coordinator. " + "
- Render first aid as needed. " + "
- Intervene in altercations between students, staff or the public to maintain safety and security. " + "
- Participate in emergencies such as fire, evacuation, lockdown, and tornado drills. " + "
- Testify at hearings as needed. " + "
- Provide guidance to students regarding available support services. " + "
- Maintain contact records, documentation of observations, and a daily log of activities. " + "
- Supervise at school-sponsored bus trips and athletic events as needed. " + "
- Assist in controlling and identifying loiterers, trespassers and other unauthorized people. " + "
- Produce reports regarding school incidents as directed. " + "
- Assist in enforcing the MMSD Conduct and Discipline Code and other school regulations. " + "
- Coordinate efforts with the Madison Police Department Officers, Educational Resource Officers, and Detective Liaison for hallway supervision. " + "
- Compile and summarize monthly and year‑to‑date reports. " + "
- Patrol parking lots, school grounds, hallways, stairwells, doorways, rooms, storage areas, and offsite locations as directed. " + "
- Become knowledgeable on the proper functioning of all security equipment and assist principals and the Security Coordinator with its use. " + "
- Perform other duties as assigned related to a safe school environment. " + "

- Ability to work in a diverse environment. " + "
- Physical ability to walk, run, lift, climb, bend, reach, and kneel. " + "
- Effective communication with students, staff, and community. " + "
- Ability to quell physical and verbal altercations. " + "

- Highly competent and committed to student success and safety. " + "
- Ability to work well under stress and react appropriately in emergencies. " + "
- Experience working cross‑culturally and commitment to improving cultural competence. " + "
- Pass a pre‑employment physical and a comprehensive background check. " + "
- Write accurate and complete reports. " + "
- Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and insured vehicle available. " + "
- Training and experience related to crisis intervention and emergency medical procedures. " + "
- CPR/AED certification required. " + "
- Experience working with middle and high school youth. " + "
- " + "
- Prior security experience. " + "
- Knowledge of the juvenile justice system. " + "
- " + "
- Travel within district and to off‑site meetings. " + "
- Work may require evenings, nights, and weekends. " + "
- In‑person required for school‑based positions unless otherwise directed. " + "
- Hybrid work flexibility may be available depending on position needs. " + "

- Lift up to 25 lbs occasionally. " + "
- Work in a variety of indoor, outdoor, and inclement weather environments. " + "
- Manual dexterity required; may be stationary for extended periods. " + "
