Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Automotive Technician
Join our team as a Fleet Technician and put your mechanical expertise to work on a wide variety of automotive, fleet, and construction equipment that keeps the City of Madison moving. Fleet Technicians perform highly skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of all types of automotive/fleet and construction equipment within the Fleet Service Division. The work is characterized by the high degree of complexity, independence, and technical discretion and may involve providing leadership and mechanical expertise to other workers.
Given the wide range of equipment this position will work on, the initial training period will introduce you to equipment unique to the City of Madison. The work is performed under the general supervision of a foreperson and is reviewed for overall results.
In addition to the City's generous employee benefits package, Fleet Technicians receive a monthly tool allowance, safety shoe allowance, are provided uniforms, and have access to the Fleet Division's on-site fitness room. Fleet Technicians assigned to the second shift receive a $3.00 per hour shift differential for regularly scheduled hours worked from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
Normal shifts are Monday through Friday, with hours from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm (second shift) or 7:30 am to 3:30 pm (first shift).
The current recruitment is to fill two (2) vacant positions. These are second shift positions, with the potential to move to first shift. The selected candidates will complete a two-to-three month training period on the first shift at our Nakoosa Trail site before moving to a second shift schedule.
Employees may be eligible for loan forgiveness through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
Black, Indigenous, people of color, women, trans, nonbinary, and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply. We value the unique blend of lived experiences and diverse perspectives that comes from non-traditional education pathways and the variety of transferrable skills each candidate brings to the table.
