HVAC Tech / Heating Engineer, Building Maintenance, Installation Technician, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Purpose of Position
Under general supervision of the Facilities Engineering Manager and Assistant Director of Maintenance, this position is responsible for a wide variety of duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, air conditioning, and temperature control systems, etc. in all Madison Metropolitan School District facilities. The position requires varied working hours and availability on an emergency basis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Perform HVAC work associated with maintenance and repair activities
- Install new HVAC equipment or programs associated with remodeling or new construction work
- Service and maintain low pressure steam and hot water boilers
- Install, maintain and repair DDC and pneumatic controls
- Troubleshoot, install and set up Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)
- Assist in estimating labor, materials and supplies for work assigned
- Maintain records of materials and labor associated with assigned work
- Visit each building frequently and be familiar with the various HVAC systems and components
- Perform other duties assigned by executive leadership or their representatives or designees
- Attend district and school functions that support MMSD’s strategic framework, initiatives, and core values
- Complete any and all district required training
- Build collaborative relationships with business partners
- Demonstrated ability to establish relationships at all levels of the organization
- Follow principles and practices that promote and advance anti‑racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Ability to install, troubleshoot and repair HVAC refrigeration equipment along with required certification to perform this work in the State of Wisconsin
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local codes, regulations and ordinances relating to construction activities and specifically with HVAC work
- Knowledge of major types of HVAC installations (common, unusual breakdowns and standard repair procedures)
- Knowledge and experience with pneumatic, electronic and DDC controls and working with Building Automation System front end graphic interfaces
- Ability to read wiring diagrams and troubleshoot HVAC equipment control problems
- Knowledge of the safety requirements, state code and general orders of the Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations, and the laws relating to construction
- Ability to read, interpret and work from construction plans, shop drawings and material specifications
- Skill in the use of all tools common to the HVAC trade
- Knowledge of and ability with HVAC rough‑in work
- Proven ability to work cooperatively and effectively with co‑workers, contractors, technical consultants, students and the public
- Experience working in refrigeration services
- Experience working cross‑culturally and/or commitment to work toward one’s own cultural competence
- Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License
- EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigerant Handling Technician Certification
- State of Wisconsin “HVAC Qualifier Certification” preferred
Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury. This position requires frequent lifting up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting up to 70 pounds. It may require being stationary for extended periods of time. There is frequent sitting, driving, squatting, crouching, ladder and stair climbing, ability to handle 30 ft heights, crawling, reaching, kneeling and repetitive movements with both hands.
Vision acuity, depth perception, etc. are frequently utilized. Verbal and auditory communication is frequently used.
Ability to perform work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year, including in inclement weather, spaces without air conditioning, and areas where temperatures may be uncomfortable or fluctuate rapidly.
Working Conditions- May involve exposure to asbestos and lead‑based surfaces.
- Work requires travel to different locations within the district and to off‑site meetings.
