Position: Construction Wireman (CW) Madison

  • DRIVER'S LICENSE
    :
    Must have a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
  • RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION
    :
    You must have reliable transportation to get to the construction site and from job-to-job.
Additional Information Regarding The Program
  • Work – A CW is required to work for an electrical contractor on various construction projects.
  • Cost – Each worker will have to purchase their own hand tools (list will be provided). Each worker will join the Local Union #159. There is a one‑time initiation fee and quarterly dues you will be required to pay after you are hired.
  • Each worker will be required to apply for a Registered Electrician License. You will apply for this license after you are hired with a contractor. The cost for this license is $35.00.
  • License – WI State Law requires that anyone who performs electrical wiring must have a State of WI Electrical License. As a CW you will be required to obtain and keep current a State of WI Electrical License. The License type designated for CW’s is the Registered Electrician License. The initial fee for the License is $35. The License will also be required to be renewed annually based on the original issue date.
  • License (Continued) – The renewal requirements are as follows:
    • The License holder must obtain a minimum of 24 Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) annually before the License is scheduled to expire. In order to obtain these CEU’s the license holder must attend courses/seminars approved for WI State Electrical License CEU’s specific for your license type. It is the license holder's responsibility to verify the courses qualify for WI State Electrical CEU’s for the proper license type.
    • Pay a renewal fee of $35 to the State of WI annually.
  • EXAMPLES OF TYPES OF PROJECTS WORKED ON
    • Commercial:
      Office Buildings, Hospitals, Schools and Shopping Centers
    • Industrial:
      Small Machine Shops, Metal Press and Stamping, Food and Medicine Production
  • Examples of Tasks Performed by Construction Electricians
    • Bending conduit / pulling of wire and cable / lighting fixture installation / digging a trench for cable or conduit / installing Romex or B.X. / wiring & setting of service switch gear / mounting and wiring transformers / reading blueprints
  • Examples of Factors That Can Affect Job Conditions
    • Stage of construction – open walls, no windows, unsealed roof
    • Weather – heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, dampness
    • Cleanliness – mud, dust, debris, water
    • Noise – tools, equipment, mfg. lines
    • Heavy Lifting – large conduit, large cable, cartons of material
  • Above the Ground – In the electrical construction trade, the majority of work is done above the ground. This work is performed using ladders, scaffolding and power lifts. If you have a fear of heights, the construction electrician program is not for you.
  • County Work Area – When placed with a contractor, you can expect to consistently work anywhere in a 4‑county area. This area includes Dane, Columbia, Iowa, and Sauk counties; and portions of Dodge, Green Lake, and Marquette Counties. You may also be asked to work in other locations in other parts of south‑central Wisconsin.
  • Wages And Benefits For CW Union Members – CW classification and wages are based on proven on‑the‑job experience. There are also additional benefits included in the wage package:
