Summary

This position is located in Engineering Service at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI – a complexity level 1B facility. The Pipefitter will make safety and preventive maintenance inspections and repairs of utility systems and equipment in accordance with VA regulations and National Codes and perform other related duties as assigned. The employee tests systems and equipment after completing work.

Experience:

A specific length of training and experience is not required, but applicants must demonstrate training or experience that shows sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties of this position. Evidence of knowledge, skills, and ability must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the job elements:
Equipment Assembly – Installation – Repair, Interpret Instructions – Specifications (including blueprint reading), Measurement and Layout, Technical Practices, Troubleshooting, Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment. Experience includes paid, unpaid, and volunteer work.

Physical Requirements:

The employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, work in tiring and uncomfortable positions, and handle items weighing up to 50 pounds or more.

Working Conditions:

The work is done inside and outside, often dirty, dusty, greasy, and smelly. The employee may be exposed to uncomfortable heat, strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, infections, and occasional broken bones.

Duties
  • Welding repairs and fabrication requiring the use of oxygen, acetylene, arc welding, and pipe welding.
  • Inspecting, adjusting, cleaning, and repairing plumbing fixtures and systems, steam-operated equipment, heating and water systems, kitchen and laundry equipment, air compressors, medical compressed air systems, vacuum systems, oxygen systems, and natural gas distribution systems.
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and manufacturers' specifications for installing and repairing equipment.
  • Making safety and preventive maintenance inspections of utility systems and equipment in accordance with VA regulations and National Codes.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
  • Testing systems and equipment after completing work.
  • Work schedule:

    8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
