Building Maintenance, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Position Summary
Skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of park facilities and infrastructure. Responsibilities include plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, masonry, and supervisory duties.
Working HoursRegular 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday–Friday (40 hours). Summer shift options and winter shift work for snow‑making or removal may be required.
Responsibilities- Perform maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction on park buildings, shelters, restrooms, playgrounds, athletic facilities, trails, utilities, and other park infrastructure.
- Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, structural, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, HVAC, painting, roofing, welding, or other related issues.
- Respond to urgent maintenance needs such as storm damage, water or electrical leaks, roof leaks, vandalism, broken equipment, unsafe structures, and other public‑safety or operational concerns.
- Conduct skilled inspections and repairs to keep public facilities safe, functional, attractive, and compliant with safety, accessibility, and department standards.
- Provide technical guidance, training, and work direction to lower‑level maintenance staff, seasonal employees, volunteers, or assigned crews.
- Monitor inventory levels and notify appropriate persons when stock reaches specified thresholds.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, materials used, equipment maintenance, safety concerns, and completed work orders.
- Interact with the public and contracted users to provide services, assistance, and enforce park rules.
- Operate motorized construction and maintenance equipment, including tractors, trucks, and similar machinery.
- Develop solutions that add value for park users and operations.
- Participate in establishing professional development goals aligned with broader county objectives.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance; work extra hours as required.
- Lead seasonal employees engaged in related work.
- Perform related tasks as required.
- High school graduation or equivalent, preferably with coursework in a construction trade.
- At least two years of responsible paid work experience in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, or masonry trades.
- Valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) without air‑brake restrictions, or pass the required Class A CDL within one year of hire. Probationary employees failing to meet the CDL requirements may be terminated.
- Driving record that meets county standards.
- Extensive knowledge of tools, methods, and materials for plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC installation and repair.
- Proficient in hand and power tool use and maintenance.
- Safe operation of over‑the‑road and off‑road motorized construction and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret plans.
- Effective communication with park users.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Knowledge of applicable safety practices and procedures of the construction trades.
- Skill in keeping accurate records related to time and materials.
- Ability to work independently and to lead and guide other employees.
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
Starting hourly rate of $25.81 plus Marathon County benefits.
