The Field Operations Bureau is comprised of eight districts that are responsible for traffic law enforcement, collision investigation, and motorist assists on 17,524 miles of state and interstate highways. This position is located within District 1, which serves Pierce and Thurston Counties.

About the Position

This position serves as a sole maintenance mechanic for District 1. The incumbent performs advanced, complex maintenance and repair work across multiple building systems within the scope permitted for non‑licensed personnel. The position independently troubleshoots facility issues, plans and coordinates small‑scale maintenance projects, and serves as a technical resource for lower‑level maintenance staff. They also coordinate, oversee, and inspect the work of licensed contractors to ensure compliance with WSP safety standards and requirements.

This position directly supports the operational readiness of the Field Operations Bureau by ensuring that District 1 facilities remain reliable, safe, and fully functional.

Maintenance Mechanic 2: $5011 - $5812 per month

Maintenance Mechanic 3: $5398 - $6259 per month

Our New Teammate Will Be Able To
  • Independently perform advanced maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of District 1 buildings, grounds, and facility systems within the scope allowed for non‑licensed personnel.
  • Independently troubleshoot and resolve complex issues involving HVAC components, mechanical systems, security systems, gates, generators, and facility infrastructure.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on building components, furniture, irrigation systems, fencing, parking areas, and related infrastructure.
  • Identify when work requires a licensed professional and initiate contractor engagement.
  • Coordinate, oversee, and inspect work performed by licensed electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, and other specialty contractors.
  • Conduct advanced preventive maintenance on facility systems and equipment.
  • Interpret and apply blueprints, sketches, and technical documents to plan and complete work.
  • Coordinate contractor activities, including site access, bid review, compliance verification, and performance monitoring.
Required Qualifications
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid, current WA State Driver's License in order to complete duties within District 1.
  • Must possess basic carpentry skills, including layout framing and concrete form work.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply working drawings and blueprints.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use basic hand and power tools safely, effectively, and efficiently.
  • Proficient in one additional trade to provide maintenance on buildings and grounds throughout the state (e.g., HVAC, furniture, cabinetry, plumbing/irrigation, electrical, security, welding, fencing, parking lot sealing and striping, curbing, excavation, or other industry trade).
  • Must have basic computer skills to send email, complete time and travel documentation, and close work orders.
  • Must be able to lift 75 pounds repeatedly, climb a ladder, sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
