Position Summary
Vallen is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Occupational Health and Safety Technician, with a heavy focus in industrial hygiene, to help ensure a safe and compliant work environment. This role involves conducting inspections, analyzing workplace conditions, and supporting the implementation of health and safety programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Exposure Monitoring: complete sampling surveys as directed by the area Industrial Hygiene Advisor. Surveys include Site, Similar Exposure Group, Sub-Similar Exposure Group, Agent/Agent Group, required number of samples, and relevant due dates for sample collection, laboratory analysis, data entry, and results in the Cority Industrial Hygiene Data Management System. Collect samples according to applicable NIOSH/OSHA/ISO methods or generally accepted IH practices.
Sample types may include personal air metals (NIOSH 7300), respirable crystalline silica (NIOSH 7500), diesel particulate matter (NIOSH 5040), surface wipe metals (SW-846 3050
B), and Legionella (SM 9260J). Direct observation of work tasks during sampling must be performed to ensure sample validity, or accurate worklogs must document conditions when direct observation is not possible. Investigate instrument data logs as needed to identify performance information that could require voiding samples. - Industrial Hygiene Monitoring Equipment Management: maintain inventory of sampling equipment, document daily calibrations where required, ensure annual calibrations are completed on schedule with certificates stored in Cority, identify instruments with calibration drift, and assist in troubleshooting and exchanging real-time gas detectors under service contracts.
- Laboratory Requisition s and Analysis: submit air samples for metals, silica, and surface metals analysis to AIHA-accredited Central Laboratory and route all other samples (e.g., diesel PM, asbestos, Legionella) to an accredited third-party lab as directed by the IH Advisor.
- Confined Space Monitoring Equipment Management: support field and office activities related to confined space monitoring equipment, calibration, gas replacement, and docking stations as needed.
- Personal Gas Detection Device Management: support calibration gases, field and office management of personal gas detection monitors and docking stations as needed.
- Data Management: use Cority for all sampling data and ensure timely entry and management of field sampling data cards, work logs, noise dosimetry reports, certificates of analysis, and other documents; scan and upload records to Cority promptly.
- Communication: act as the primary point of contact for the site IH Advisor and coordinate information flow.
- Incident Investigation: review sampling data to assess PPE effectiveness and assist in investigations of any exceedances to understand conditions and PPE performance during sampling.
- Documentation and Recordkeeping: document all sample-related information on Field Sampling Data Cards and maintain NIST-traceable calibration certificates as required.
- Experience in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of industrial hygiene field sampling and equipment calibration.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Proficiency in safety management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
